Asael Taylor Sorensen, Sr., passed away peacefully Wed., August 1, 2001, secure in the love of family and friends who surrounded him.

Born January 24, 1918, to Hans and Maggie Sorensen in the small farming community of Burton, Idaho, he began his life of service as a young man when called as a missionary to Brazil.

Following his release he enlisted in the army and was sent overseas with the Army Intelligence Corps during World War II.

He married the love of his life, Ida Lorene Mason, in the Salt Lake Temple on March 10, 1944. In 1953 he was called to serve as president of the Brazilian Mission and later to preside over the newly-organized Brazil South Mission. A master teacher and organizer, these were years filled with never-to-be-forgotten experiences among the Brazilian people and his beloved missionaries.

During their 57 years together, he and Ida served the Lord in Brazil, Uruguay, Hong Kong, Ecuador and the United States. He held many leadership positions including mission president, bishop, stake presidency, mission and regional representative, patriarch, service with the Hong Kong area presidency, and temple sealer. He also served seven years as the Church real estate representative for South America, travelling throughout South America and later to parts of Europe, South Africa and Southeast Asia, to acquire building sites for chapels and temples.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude for his doctors and nurses, friends and neighbors who have gone the extra mile in helping care for him during these past few months, especially the men from his priesthood quorum who came several times each day to turn him, providing comfort and relief along with healthy doses of good fellowship and laughter.

He is survived by his wife, Ida; his children: Ellen (Don) Holsinger, Provo; Jeanne (Roque) Willard, Show Low, Arizona; Kris (Kelly) Gehret, Orem; Colleen (Ralph) Chipman, Salt Lake City; Ace (Marilyn), Orem; Mark (Sherrill), Weston, Florida; Lori (Otto) Dickman; thirty-one beautiful grandchildren and seven precious great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Alta Nye, Dawn Edwards, Sherry Clayville and Marion Clayton; and his brother, Howard Sorensen.
