    Phillip Benefield Sr., beloved and loving husband of 52 years, proud father to two sons and friend of nearly anyone he met passed away peacefully the morning of December 15th, at home in Decatur, GA. He was 73 years old.

    A memorial service celebrating his life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday Dec. 18th at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur, GA. With Dr. Glenn Ethridge officiating.

    Phil was born in LaGrange, GA to Dorsey and Lorene Benefield and graduated from LaGrange High School. He attended North Georgia College where he was an active member and leader of the military honor society Scabbard and Blade. Upon graduation he was commissioned an Armor officer in the United States Army. He and Beth were stationed at Fort Stewart, GA and he deployed shortly afterward for a year with the 18th Airborne Corps peacekeeping force as a tank platoon leader to Santa Domingo. After serving his obligation he left service and began a career in finance and banking eventually becoming a municipal bond trader which lasted until his retirement as the Director, Municipal Securities Division, Smith Barney.

    After retirement Phil endeavored to serve others through various philanthropic and service organizations. He served on a number of boards of director narrowing his service to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Troup County Dulcimer club. He attended a number of courses in support of the USCG including radio school and a culinary course. He played the guitar for the Troupers where he accompanied them as they played in churches and nursing homes.

    He was a keen fisherman and boater and enjoyed being on water of any kind. He was a lover of good music, particularly country and classic rock music. He also picked up leatherworking and enjoyed creating belts, key rings, guitar straps and holsters for friends and family. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and the Hope Sunday School class which has been together for 35 years and spent considerable time studying and finding answers to questions about faith.

    Phil is survived by his wife of 52 years Beth Crouch Benefield of Decatur, GA, son Phillip, daughter in law Kim, granddaughters Mary, Rebecca and Katherine of LaGrange GA, son Thomas, daughter in law Anna, and granddaughters Ramona and Corrine also of Decatur, GA.

    Our family thanks the many doctors, PAs, nurses and caregivers who extended his life and made the last few months much better than they would have been without them. We could not have done it without you. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church or to a charity of your choice.

    Elizabeth Crouch Benefield, 73, one of the most graceful, intelligent, and caring of women passed away peacefully the morning of March 28th, at home in Decatur, GA with her sons by her side. She fought long and hard against pulmonary fibrosis and outlived the disease prognosis by two years. A memorial service celebrating her life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Apr. 1st at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur, GA.

    Beth was born in Vidalia, GA to Thomas and Helen Crouch. She graduated from Decatur High School and attended LaGrange College. It was there she met her love and future husband, Phil Benefield, who was home from North Georgia College. They married and Beth transferred to North Georgia with Phil. Upon Phil's graduation and commissioning in the U.S. Army, they were stationed at Fort Stewart, GA. Beth finished her undergraduate classes at Georgia Southern University with a degree in Education. She became a teacher, returning to her high school alma mater. She stopped teaching to raise her sons but returned to the classroom shortly after Thomas graduated.

    Among other things she loved to travel. With her husband, she traveled to England, Greece, Germany, Switzerland, Hawaii, Alaska, and many states in the continental US also.

    She was involved in many areas of community life from early on. Elementary Room Mom, Cub Scout Den Mom, Friends of Fernbank, Garden Club, Junior League of DeKalb County, and always very involved in church activities at Oak Grove UMC. She made lifelong friends at Oak Grove through Disciple Bible Studies, the Hope Sunday School Class, Covenant group, Fidelis Circle and more.

    She is survived by her son Phillip, daughter-in-law Kim, granddaughters Mary, Rebecca, and Katherine of LaGrange, GA; son Thomas, daughter-in-law Anna, and granddaughters Ramona and Corinne of Decatur, GA. Our family thanks the caregivers, doctors, nurses and friends who extended her life, shared their love and made the last few months much better than they would have been without them. We could not have done it without you.

    Thomas "Tom" Alexander Crouch, Jr., 103, passed away Friday January 4, 2008 after a brief illness less than 3 weeks shy of his 104th birthday.

    He was born January 23, 1904 in Spaulding Co., GA, son of the late Mary Lou Clark and Thomas A. Crouch, Sr. He was a 1928 graduate of the University of Georgia in Civil Engineering. Tom worked for the State of Georgia for the Highway Department, now Department of Transportation for 37 years retiring in 1967. He retired June 30th from the state and went to work for DeKalb County July 5th in their Roads and Drainage Department for 18 months. Tom enjoyed repairing clocks at Denny's Clock shop and woodworking in his retirement. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.

    Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years Helen Wilson Crouch, his 2nd wife of 10 years Blanche Fincher Crouch; his grandson John Samuel Faulkner, Jr.; his parents and his six siblings.

    He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Phil Benefield of Decatur, and Mary Alice and Joe Wood of Oak Ridge, TN; his three grandchildren and their spouses, Thomas and Anna Benefield of Decatur, Lt. Col. Phillip and Kim Benefield of Honolulu, Hawaii and Drs. Lee Anne and Richard O'Brien of Brentwood, TN. He was so proud of them and his eight great-grandchildren, Ramona and Corinne Benefield of Decatur, Mary, Rebecca, and Katherine Benefield of Honolulu, and Thomas, Jonathan, and Peter O'Brien of Brentwood. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, June Crouch of Huntsville, AL and Eugenia Wilson of Lyons, GA. and several nieces and nephews.

    The body will be cremated.

    Memorial services will be held Saturday January 12, 2008 at 2pm at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Dr. H. Dan Rice officiating.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Rd., Decatur, GA 30033-1299 or to a charity of your choice.

    The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the service on Saturday. A. S. Turner & Sons.
