    Berry F. Rhoden, 77, of Macclenny died on Monday, January 26, 2009, at Kindred Hospital of North Florida in Green Cove Springs. A native of Eddy, Florida, in north Baker County, He was the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Rosa Crews Rhoden.

    Mr. Rhoden retired from the United States Army in 1969 after 20 years of service that included tours in Korea, where he was a prisoner of war, and Vietnam. After his retirement he moved with his family back to Macclenny and served as a deputy sheriff from 1969-1971 then as a truant officer for the Baker County School Board from 1971-1975. He was also an equipment manager for the Jacksonville Express football team in the World Football League.

    Mr. Rhoden was the recipient of numerous military awards, recognized by the United States Congress, and honored in 2007 by the Florida Legislature for his heroic service to our country and state. He was a Master Mason, a 32nd Degree Shriner and a Christian, serving as deacon for a number of years.

    He was preceded in death by son Robert Dean Rhoden in 1988, brother Grover Cleveland Rhoden Jr, and four sisters, Elvie Rhoden, Marietta Harvey, Thelma Kernan and Juanita Crews.

    Mr. Rhoden is survived by Faye Claudine "Dean" Rhoden, his wife of 58 years; son Berry "Timer" Rhoden Jr. (Kay) of Melrose; daughters Connie McGlew (Tommy) of Macclenny and Rebecca Ogletree (Marshall) of Tallahassee; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

    The funeral service for Mr. Rhoden will be conducted on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Macclenny with Senior Adult Minister Rev. Jerry Sisk officiating. Interment will follow at North Prong Cemetery.

    Visitation with the family will be from 6:30-9:00 pm on Wednesday evening at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Guerry Funeral Home, Macclenny.

    Mrs. Faye Claudine “Dean” Rhoden, age 86, of Macclenny, Florida died Saturday, July 21, in the Big Bend Hospice, Tallahassee, Florida following a brief illness.

    Mrs. Rhoden was born in the Taylor community of Baker county and traveled with her husband during his military career. After his retirement they moved back to Macclenny, Florida in 1969. She then attended college and became a charter graduate of the University of North Florida, Jacksonville, Florida with a Master’s Degree in Education and then taught school in the Baker County School System for 20 years until her retirement. She was a former president of the Macclenny Women’s Club and was Florida Women of the Year. She also was a member of the Leona Knabb Order of the Eastern Star and Worthy Matron and mother advisor of the Order of the Rainbow Girls. She loved to travel, read, work in her garden and was known as being able to cook the best fried chicken in Macclenny.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Berry Floyd Rhoden, Sr., her son, Robert Rhoden and her parents, Ray Leonard and Athena Irene Raulerson Brown.

    She is survived by her two daughters, Connie (Tommy) McGlew of Macclenny, Florida and Rebecca (Marshall) Ogletree of Tallahassee, Florida: her son, Berry (Kay) Rhoden, Jr. of St. Augustine Beach, Florida: Four sisters, Nettie Ruth Brown of St. Augustine, Florida, Betty Madden of Anderson, South Carolina, Marjorie Dunn of Dothan, Alabama and Gail Brown of Glen St. Mary, Florida: one brother, George “Bud” Brown of Palm Bay, Florida: 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren also survive.

    A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Rhoden will be held at 1 P.M. Wednesday, July 25, in the First Baptist Church, Macclenny, Florida with Dr. Edsel Bone, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in North Prong Cemetery, Baker County, Florida.
