Mr. Donald E. (Eddie) Whitehead, Jr., 60, died Wednesday, November 21, 2007 in Tuscaloosa, AL. He was born on May 13, 1947 in Lake City and graduated from Columbia High School and Lake City Community College. Mr. Whitehead was a former firemen and E.M.T. with the Lake City Fire Department, a Security Guard with the Florida Dept. of Corrections and the Mississippi Dept. of Corrections. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lake City, FL and First Baptist Church in Starkville, MS. He served ten years in the Army with three years in Vietnam, where he was a specialist 4th Class, 82nd Airborne. Mr. Whitehead earned the Purple Heart, Marksman, Airborne, Paratrooper, and Bronze Star medals. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald E. Whitehead, Sr.; and his grandparents, H.N. (Hickey) and Allie Pearce Greene of Lake City and G.A. and Laura Whitehead of Lake City.
Mr. Whitehead is survived by his mother and step-father, Inez Green Mathis and Leon H. Mathis, Jr., Starkville, MS; sisters, Nancy Whitehead Martin (Mitch), Starkville, MS and Rhonda Mathis Shotts (Charles), Louisville, MS; three brothers, Michael R. Whitehead (Martha), Columbia, MO; Matt Mathis (Kathy), Starkville, MS and Mark Mathis (Whitney), Starkville, MS; a special friend, Sue Warren of Fayette, AL; nephews, Ryan Shotts, Louisville, MS; Caleb, Seth, and Paul Mathis all of Starkville, MS and nieces, Becky and Laurel Whitehead also survive.
Graveside services will be conducted, Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at Corinth Cemetery in Lake City with Reverend Mark Mathis officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Monday evening at Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of GATEWAY-FOREST LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 3596 S. In Starkville, MS, on Friday, January 21, 2022, Inez Greene Mathis, age 93 was received home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A graveside celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Corinth Church, Lake City FL, Visitation will be graveside from 1:00 pm until service time. Rev. Inez Greene Mathis was born April 10, 1928 in Lake City, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents Allie and Henry "Hicky" Greene, her husband of 53 years, Leon H. Mathis, Jr., her sons Donald Edward Whitehead, Jr. "Eddie" and Michael Ray Whitehead "Mike". She is survived by her sister, Ernestine Saunders, Lake City, FL a nephew Richard Saunders, Lake City, FL, her daughters, Nancy Whitehead Martin, Starkville, MS, and Rhonda Mathis Shotts (Charles), Louisville, MS and her sons, Leon H. Mathis, III "Matt" and Mark Lee Mathis, Starkville, MS. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren Rebecca Tucker (Dave), Laurel Scobee (Nick), Ryan Shotts (Katie), Caleb Mathis, Seth Mathis and Paul Mathis and 5 great grandchildren.
Inez was born and raised in Lake City, FL, attended Columbia High School where she was a member of the basketball team. She was a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church, Lake City, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, RA’s, GA’s and WMU. She was also very active in the community, CHS Band Association, PTA, Women’s Club, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She continued her service to First Baptist Church in Starkville, MS, teaching Sunday School, WMU, Foreign Missions and delivering flowers to members unable to attend services. Inez touched many lives and will be truly missed.
