    A native of Odum GA he moved to Keystone Heights in 1973 from Jacksonville. Was a retired Supervisor of Public Works at Jax N.A.S. Veterans of Army Corps, WW2 & member of Hope Baptist Church & the Y.A.H. Club both at Theressa.

    Survived by his wife of 60 yrs, Myrtle Clary; daughter, Paulette Cox of Green Cove Springs, Darnell Taylor of Lexington, SC & Arlene Batten of Jax; son Mitch Clary of Keystone Heights; brother, Wilson Clary Jax; 11 grandchildren & 11 great grandchildren.

    Funeral Service at 11:00 AM Thur. 7/11 at Hope Baptist Church with Dr. Gene Coons & Gary Heath officiating.

    Burial at 2:30PM in Riverside Memorial Park, Jax.

    Family will receive friends at JONES FUNERAL HOME 352/473-3176, WED. 6:30-8:P00PM.

    On December 2, 2020, Myrtle Clary, 96 years old, passed into eternity and into the arms of her Heavenly Father while surrounded by her children at home in Keystone Heights. She was a beloved servant of God, a mother, sister, granny, great-granny, great-great-granny (GG), and friend to many.

    She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward Clary, and

    survived by her daughters Paulette Cox (Roger), Darnell Taylor (Danny), Arlene Batten (David), and son Mitch Clary. She is also survived by grandchildren Paul Cox (Tammy), Randy Cox (Kristin), Roy Cox (Cathy), Tracy Biske (Greg), Jeannie Clary, Eddy Batten (Shannon), Monica Best (Cable), Mandy Wray, and Mitchell Clary; great-grandchildren Ryan Cox, Reid Cox, Amber Batten, Cara Cox, Conner Best, Ruby Cox, Hayden Shaw, Brooke Best, Nicholas Batten, Kaden Wray, Cable Best II, Kaylie Wray, Tanner Wray, Henry Batten, and Elizabeth Batten; and great-great-grandchildren Riley Cox, Cooper Cox, Parker Cox, Camryn Cox, Lucas Batten and Brooklyn Batten.

    In addition to being the matriarch of a large, beautiful family, Myrtle was also very active in her church, Hope Baptist. She held many different roles in the church and its affiliated school over the years. She enjoyed seeing and reading to the school children every week and giving them big hugs. She loved playing games every week and had a standing date every Thursday with her family and friends - she was especially competitive at Phase10, Dominoes and Rummikub. She has travelled all over the country in her lifetime and is especially fond of the Blue Ridge Mountains and good old-fashioned gospel music. Her family has many wonderful memories of spending time with her at her home on Crystal Lake.

    Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020 at Riverside Memorial Park in Jacksonville. Masks are required.

    Notes:

    Willis Aaron Hodges was the ancestor and progenerator of most all of the Hodges families that settled in Moniac Charlton, Georgia, and the Northeast Florida area of Nassau and Duval County, Florida. Willis Aaron Hodges was born in Tattnall, Georgia, Aug. l, 1812, son of William Hodges. He and his brother William R. Hodges came to Camden County as young men and married there (in the portion made into Charlton County in 1858). Willis A. married Feb. 23, 1843, in Camden County, Georgia, to Mehalia Johns, born 1827 in Camden County, daughter of George Johns and his wife Anna. They had fifteen children, so they were off to a good start of populating the surrounding counties of south Georgia and northeast Florida. The history of Willis Aaron's life portrays him as a "rough and ready" frontier man. Mr. Hodges, an Indian fighter, and served several enlistment's in the Indian Wars. His first wife died about 1880, Mr. Hodges married Mrs. Basheby Gainey, said to be a Cherokee Indian, born Jan.10, 1845, in Ware County, died in Charlton, Georgia, Nov. 3, 1931. Two children were born by her. Willis Aaron Hodges died Aug. 7, 1886, age 74 years, only a few months after the birth of his 17th child. He was buried in Canaday Cemetery near Moniac, Georgia. Ref: "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia", Vol. VII, pg. 196, 197 & 198. 1860 Federal Census, Charlton, Georgia 1880 Federal Census Charlton Co, GA "Charlton County Georgia Historical Notes - 1972", pg. 405 & 406. "History of Charlton County", by Alex. S. McQueen, pg. 42-46.

    POWG Vol VII, p.145-146 has Henry Gainey, Jr., (1840-1864) son of Henry
    (1810-1870) and Olive Gainey. He is listed as married to "Basheby Heath", and as
    "killed in battle, 1864".

    Willis A. Hodges is also in Vol. VII, p196. States his second wife was
    "Basheby Gainey, b. Jan. 10, 1845, in Ware County, died in Charlton County, Nov. 3,
    1931". Not clear if she was born in Ware County, or they were married in Ware
    County. Two children:

    Joel Lee, b. Apr. 19, 1884, m. Sarah Iola Robinson
    Grover Cleveland, b. Jan. 31, 1886, m. Victoria Crawford.

    The entry notes that Basheby Heath was in the 1860 census of Charlton County
    as Basheby Heath, age 18. States Henry Gainey was killed at Battle of
    Spottsylvania, May, 1864. Hodges died Aug. 7, 1886.

    David Rowell is listed in Vol. VII, p355. His
    first wife was Jane Howard. In 1890, he married Basheba Hodges. POWG lists one
    son, Spencer M. Rowell, b. Aug. 15, 1891, died Sept. 21, 1950. Spencer's wife
    was Katie Crawford. David, Basheba and Spencer are listed as
    buried in Emmeus Church Cemetery, near St. George.

    Willis married Basheba Heath on 4 Aug 1883 in Charlton, Georgia, USA. Basheba (daughter of Living and Living) was born on 10 Jan 1845 in Ware, Georgia, USA; died on 3 Nov 1931 in Charlton, Georgia, USA; was buried in Emmaus Church Cemetery, Charlton, Georgia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
