    Clyde Allen "Shifty" Berry, age 70, died Thursday, November 21 1991 at his home in Houston. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 23 at Houston Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Chickasaw Memorial gardens with the Rev. Al Gaspard and the Rev. Danny Dabbs officiating.

    The son of the late Allen Enochs Berry and the late Mable Dalton Dye Berry, he was born in Chickasaw County. A Veteran of World War II, he was held a prisoner of war for 14 months in Germany. He was a retired Chickasaw County Tax Assessor, having held the office for 16 years, from 1960 until 1976 and was a member of Houston First Baptist Church. Berry received his nickname, Shifty, from his high school football days at Houston High School.

    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Natalie Scruggs Berry of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Susan Pepper and Mrs. Allyson Phillips, both of Houston; one son, Tommy Berry of Memphis, Tennessee; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Box of Houlka and Mrs. Margaret DeLawter of Indiana; two brothers, Herman Berry of Houlka and James Berry of Hernando and three grandchildren.

    Active pallbearers were Mike Price, Leon Davis, Lonnie Whitt, bob Chamblee, Marlin Yarbrough, Robert Kendall and Gene Vanlandingham. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Houston High School Baseball Team.

    Houston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    HOUSTON - Natalie Scruggs Berry, 87, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at her home in Houston.

    She was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Iuka to James Wiley Sr. and Carrie Mae Kelly Scruggs. She was the owner of Houston Florist for over 50 years and was joined in the business by her daughter, Susan, five years ago. In her younger years, she was very active in the community. She was a former president of Houston Jaycettes, a member of the Eastern Star, a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, a former member of the Pilot Club of Houston and she was a member of Chickasaw Development Foundation. She enjoyed painting, playing the piano and growing her African violets. She loved people, never met a stranger and had a zeal for life.

    Visitation is Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. services at Houston Funeral Home. Dr. Daniel Heeringa will officiate. Burial will be at Chickasaw Memorial Gardens in Houston.

    Survivors include her son, Tommy Berry (Lynn) of Cordova, Tenn.; daughters, Susan Pepper (Gregg) of Houston, Allyson Leitner (Lee) of Starkville; grandchildren, Brian Pepper (Danielle) of Madison, Kelli Pepper of New Orleans, La., Allie Phillips of Ingomar, and Tyler Phillips of Starkville; great-grandchildren, Olivia Kate and William Jude Pepper; and her very special neice, Debbie Scruggs Tollison of Hernando.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clyde Allen "Shifty" Berry, who died exactly 20 years ago to the day; brothers, Thomas Hercul Scruggs and James Wiley Scruggs Jr.; and her beloved sister, Allie Mae Scruggs Anglin.

    Pallbearers are Gregg Pepper, Brian Pepper, Lee Leitner, Bob Chamblee, Jeff Chamblee, William B. Turman and James Neal.

    J W Scruggs, Sr. Laid to Rest

    Services for James Wiley Scruggs, Sr., of Houston were held at 2 pm Sunday at Houston Funeral Home with the Rev. Max Duer and the Rev. J F Hartley officiating. Burial was in Houston Cemetery with Houston Funeral Home in charge.

    Mr. Scruggs died at 10:45 am last Friday at Houston Hospital after an illness of two weeks. He was 73.

    He was a native of Iuka but had lived here for the past 27 years. He was a retired former employee of the State Highway Department and a Presbyterian.

    He leaves his wife, Mrs. Carrie Kelley Scruggs of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Dale Anglin and Mrs. Clyde Berry, both of Houston; two sons, Hercul Scruggs of Shreveport, La., and James W Scruggs, Jr., of Charleston, S C; one sister, Mrs. Anna Scruggs of Iuka; two brothers, W B Scruggs and Grady Scruggs, both of Iuka, and six grandchildren.

    Pallbearers were John Mihelic, Bill Clements, Roy House, Crockett Brown, Melvin Chrestman and Fred McIntosh.

    Services Are Conducted For Mrs. Scruggs

    Services were conducted at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, June 13 from the Houston Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Carrie Mae Scruggs who died at 6 am, June 12, 1972. She was 71. Mr. J W Holliday officiated, with interment in the Houston Cemetery.

    Pallbearers were Roy P Davis, Bo Young, Hassell Franklin, A E Estes, W C Crump and Hal Allen.

    Mrs. Scruggs died at her home at 569 N Pontotoc St. The widow of the late James W Scruggs, she had resided in Houston for 30 years. She was born in Alabama, the daughter of Ozie Gardner and James Helley. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Natalie Berry and Mrs. Allie Mae Anglin, both of who reside in Houston, and two sons, James W Scruggs, Jr., of Houston and Thomas H Scruggs of Shreveport, La. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. John Billingsly of Corinth, and by six grandchildren.

    Final Rites Held for J S Kelley

    Final Rites were held at the home Sunday afternoon for Mr. J S Kelley, who died Friday night after an illness of five weeks. The services were conducted by the Rev. R B Patterson assisted by the Rev. G F Wilson and the Rev. W L Storment.

    Mr. Kelley was 62 years old, having been born October 28, 1876, in Fayette County, Alabama. For the past 15 years he had lived in and near Okolona. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

    He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. John Billingsley of Corinth, Mrs. J W Scruggs, Miss Charleen Kelley, three sons, Bill Kelley of Amory, Sherrill and Shannon Kelley.

    Burial was in the I O O F Cemetery. Active pallbearers were O T Robbins, Y T Rowan, E D Graham, Hob Anderson, Farris Griffin and Ira Morris.

    The honorary pallbearers were Dr. B D Hansell, Dr. J C Luper, Dr. A F Wicks, A W James, W E Bearden, G H Shelton, W G Chenault, Ira Francis, C W Anderson, S V Sullivan, Bryan Hogan, W H West, W C Chandler, George Corley, Herd Hill, all of Okolona, and H B Billingsley, Sam Castleburry, Chester Blassengame, Gerbert Ijms and Bomar Melton, of Corinth.

    Rites Held Thursday For Mrs. J. S. Kelley

    Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock services were held in the Chapel of the Barry Funeral Home for Mrs. Ozie Gardner Kelley of Memphis, formerly of Okolona. The rites were conducted by the rev. Allison Bell, pastor of Okolona First Baptist Church,and E. C. Day, minister of Okolona Church of Christ. Burial was in Oddfellows Cemetery with Barry in charge.

    Mrs.Kelley, who was 83, died at 10:30 Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe E. Moore in Memphis where she made her home since 1948. Born in Iuka, she was married to J. S. Kelley who died in 1939. Most of her married life was spent in Okolona and she was a member of First Baptist Church.

    She leaves two other daughters, Mrs. J. W. Scruggs of Houston, Mrs. John Billingsley of Corinth, one son, Shirrell Kelley of Okolona, four brothers, Estes gardner, Bill Gardner, Bill Gardner, Richard Gardner and Burea Gardner, all of Iuka, two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Adams and Mrs. Mamie Grisham of Iuka, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
