Melvin E. Kessinger, 74, died of cancer Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at his home in Spanish Fork, Utah.

He was born Aug. 27, 1935, in Rupert, Idaho, to Eugene Kessinger and Ruby Rasmussen Southern. After Mel was diagnosed with cancer, he was inflicted by other complications. Though this caused much pain, suffering and many trips to the hospital he consistently baffled medical authorities with his contagious positive attitude, great sense of humor and miraculous ability to heal. In fact, he was affectionately known as "Miracle Mel."

Mel will be remembered for his quiet acts of kindness. He built up those around him through service and sacrifice. He lived a simple and humble life. His enjoyments came from family, friends, his farm and learning. During his retired years, he enjoyed working on his small farm raising Shetland ponies and miniature goats. As a young father, he raised goats and sold their milk to parents with children allergic to milk.

Mel was married to Ellie Kessinger in the Arizona Temple in 1966. They had two boys and 37 years of marriage before she died in 2003. Later, Mel married Barbra Cherrington in the Timpanogos Temple. They have one daughter. Melvin received his bachelor's degree from BYU and earned his master's degree in social work from Florida State University. He worked for 29 years as a social worker for the Division of Child and Family Services in Utah. His continuing education included hypnosis, guided imagery and other therapies that he mastered to help all types of clients. Mel served our country in the Army and followed politics closely - he enjoyed his freedom.

Melvin was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served an LDS mission in the U.S. Central States area. Mel enjoyed life. He had too many talents to list and used them all in helping others. He was soft-spoken, genuine, kind, funny and never held grudges. Mel Kessinger will be greatly missed by his wife, family and friends. We'll especially miss the dangerous pancakes, his vast knowledge on hydrogen peroxide and his fun songs he'd sing.

He is survived by his wife, Barbra; his sons, Bryan and Tom Kessinger; his daughter, Eliza Kessinger; and his seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Ruby Southern; and his siblings, Neil, Leon, Donna, Jay, Larry, Jim, Wayne and Kirk. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Ellie Kessinger.

The funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 12, in Spanish Fork, Utah. Interment is in the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, Utah.

Ellouise (Ellie) Kessinger returned home to her Heavenly Father on the evening of Wednesday July 2, 2003 due to complications from a car accident.

Ellie was born in Phoenix, Arizona on September 16, 1932. She married Melvin Kessinger in 1966 and had two sons.

Ellie will be remembered as a loving individual who was always willing to serve others. She loved her family, she loved life, and she loved teaching and helping those in need. Those who knew her well can remember her saying, "If you leave our house hungry, it's your own fault."

For 31 years Ellie taught school in California and Utah, touching the hearts of young children wherever she went. She obtained a Bachelors Degree from the University of Arizona, and a Masters equivalent from Brigham Young University. Ellie served in several ward and stake callings within the Mapleton 4th Ward and Spanish Fork Canyon Pointe Ward.

Ellie is survived by her husband, Mel Kessinger; two sons, Bryan and Tom Kessinger; three grandchildren; younger brother, Milton Nielson; and mother, Louise Nielson. She will be deeply missed by her family, grandchildren, and many friends.

The funeral celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at the Canyon View Stake Building, 989 South 2550 East, Spanish Fork.

A viewing will be held for family and friends on Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Walker Mortuary, 187 South Main Street, Spanish Fork from 6-8 p.m. and on Monday at the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the services.

Burial will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.

Louise Milton Nielson

Louise M. Nielson, 97, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, October 11, 2006. She was born in Lake City, Florida on July 9, 1909 to Augustus and Laura Eveline Waldron Milton. She attended schools in Florida and moved to Arizona to marry George Edward Nielson in 1929. Shortly after her marriage, they moved to White River Indian Reservation to work for the Indian Services. She was the mother of three children and grandmother to twelve grandchildren. She was known for her love of animals, her genealogy work, and her skills in painting and sewing.

After her husband died in 1973, Louise lived between Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah with family members. She loved to meet new people and tell stories of her history and the information she discovered in her genealogy work. Louise was a hard worker and taught everyone she met about the value of hard work. She would always say that "Life was her education", stressing the importance of hard work in her life.

She is survived by a son, Milton Nielson, of Arizona; her caretakers, Melvin Kessinger (son-in-law); Barbara Kessinger (Step daughter-in-law); and Eliza Kessinger, granddaughter; a son in law, Jay Bloomfield, New Mexico; three sisters, Marguarite Marton; Jackie Winton; and Marie Wheeler, all of Florida, 10 grand sons, 2 granddaughters, many great- grandchildren, and a few great- great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her daughters, Mary Bloomfield, New Mexico; and Ellouise Kessinger, Utah.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 16, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Walker Mortuary, 187 South Main, Spanish Fork. Family and friends may call on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m., or on Monday morning from 8:45 - 9:45 prior to services at the mortuary. Interment will be in Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, Phoenix, Arizona.
