Teaching and learning never stopped for this 'useful soul' Lillian McIntosh, 92, of St. Louis Park was a former teacher and loving grandmother and great-grandmother. : Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Star Tribune: Newspaper of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis, MN) - Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Deceased Name: Teaching and learning never stopped for this 'useful soul' Lillian McIntosh, 92, of St. Louis Park was a former teacher and loving grandmother and great-grandmother.

Lillian McIntosh of St. Louis Park and formerly of West Palm Beach, Fla., was a high school teacher for more than a quarter of a century, but she continued to be an educator long after she left the classroom.

McIntosh died Aug. 1 at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park after battling ovarian cancer for several months. She was 92.

Her daughter, Betty Shaw, said her mother's courage and humility in the face of chemotherapy and other aspects of the disease and treatment were inspiring. Her mother fought hard to get well, but she also wasn't upset, because she'd had a good life.

"My mother was the most unselfish person without being self-effacing," said Shaw, 64, of St. Louis Park. "Her first thought was always about others."

McIntosh taught Latin and English for more than 25 years in the West Palm Beach-Lake Worth school district. Her late husband, Russell McIntosh, was a judge in Palm Beach County.

Shaw grew up in the South during the 1950s and 1960s and said her parents were ahead of their time in terms of equality.

As a child, McIntosh said she remembers that her father refused to let juries eat at segregated restaurants and would have their meals catered instead. She said it was a bold stand at the time. Shaw said her mother also set a good example and always treated everyone she met with respect.

In the academic arena, Shaw said her mother introduced her and her younger brother Mike to books and subjects most children didn't learn until they were much older, if at all. She said her mother always made learning exciting.

"It was never a chore," Shaw said. "It was wonderful. My English grammar deteriorated when I went to school."

A few weeks before McIntosh died, she visited the Pompeii exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul. Shaw said she'd read accounts about the destroyed city in Latin by the Roman historian Livy. And a few days before her death, she attended a book club meeting.

"She loved to read," Shaw said. "She was reading all the time."
McIntosh moved to St. Louis Park about five years ago to live with Shaw because she was experiencing short-term memory loss, and to be closer to her four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Shaw said her mother worried about overstaying her welcome, but everyone wanted her to stay with them.

"She was a useful soul," Shaw said.

The nonagenarian helped her granddaughter Laura Shaw-Wright of Golden Valley after her great-granddaughter Stella was born. Shaw said her daughter took maternity leave from her job as a teacher and was happy her grandmother could help. In April, McIntosh visited Disneyland with two of her grandchildren and their families.

"My grandmother always assumed the best about all people," Deb Cornelius of Eden Prairie said. "She was a great role model."

In addition to Shaw, Shaw-Wright and Cornelius, survivors include her son, Mike McIntosh of Boca Raton, Fla., a brother, Ralph Turlington of Durham, N.C., granddaughters Kathy Deal of Wayzata and Lisa Robinson of St. Louis Park, and nine great-grandchildren, Jeff, Haley, Joe, Andrew, Sarah, Faith, Grace, Lilly and Stella.
