    Notes:

    Fifth governor of Florida
    October 7, 1861 to April 1, 1865

John Milton was born near Louisville, Ga., on April 20, 1807. A descendant of the English poet John Milton, he practiced law, first in a number of Georgia and Alabama communities and later in New Orleans. Before coming to Florida in 1846, Milton allegedly killed an adversary in a duel.

After entering Florida politics, Milton became a statewide force in the Democratic party, serving as a presidential elector in 1848 and as a member of the 1850 House of Representatives. A vigorous states-righter, Milton encouraged the early secession of Florida from the Union.

As governor, Milton stressed Florida's ability to serve as an important source of food and salt for the Confederate war effort. On April 1, 1865, as the southern cause was collapsing, John Milton shot himself at "Sylvania," his home near Marianna. In his last message to the legislature, he had said, "Death would be preferable to reunion."

John Milton was the fifth Governor of Florida (October 7, 1861- April 1, 1865). He was born near Louisville in Jefferson County, Georgia on April 21, 1807. He was the son of General Homer Virgil and Elizabeth (Robinson) Milton. He was an attorney who practiced in a number of Georgia and Alabama communities and in New Orleans. He served in Florida during the Seminole War as a captain of a volunteer company and in 1846 moved to Jackson County as a farmer. He became active in politics and was a presidential elector in 1848 and a member of the House of Representatives from Jackson County in 1850. He was a vigorous States-Righter who encouraged the seizure by Florida forces of a Federal military establishments and also instrumental in the early secession of Florida from the Union.

As Governor, he developed a very active state militia and stressed Florida's ability to serve as an important source of food and salt for the Confederate forces. Collapse of the Southern cause was followed by his death, April 1,1865 by a self-inflected gunshot wound at his family home Sylvania, near Marianna preferring “death to reunion.” He was married twice. He had 4 children by his first wife, Susan Amanda Cobb. His first wife died on April 25, 1842 and in 1844 he married again to Caroline Howze of Alabama with whom he had 10 children.

John married Caroline Howze in 1844. Caroline was born on 20 Mar 1826 in North Carolina, USA; died on 26 Sep 1901 in Marianna, Jackson, Florida, USA; was buried in Saint Lukes Episcopal Cemetery, Marianna, Jackson, Florida, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Residence: 1900, Navasota Ward 2, Grimes, Texas

    Notes:

Second wife of Florida Governor John Milton. Caroline Howze (House) came to Perry County, Alabama as a child. Members of her Howze family also lived in Mobile. She was well educated and her family was accustom to being in the social circles of politicians and lawyers. It was there she met a 37-year-old lawyer who was a recent widower with small children living in Mobile. At the age of 18 years, she became his bride in 1844. After a steam boat accident and her husband being burned badly, the family moved to his family's plantation, the Sylvannia, in Jackson County, FL. There she lived a true Southern Belle's life-style on a huge cotton plantation with slaves. She borne 10 children to this union with her youngest being 4-years-old when the governor, after realizing the Confederacy had lost the war, committed suicide in their bedroom. He left her with the task of being a single mother who was penniless in a war-torn state on a plantation without slaves to work the fields. In 1910, she was living with one of her son's in Texas, but was laid to rest next to her husband in the family's Jackson county, FL plot at her death in 1901.
