*1861 - From Office of the Secretary of State, Illinois State Archives, Springfield, Illinois - from the Muster and Descriptive Rolls of Illinois Civil War Units:
John J. McBride enlisted as a Private in Company F, 48th Infantry, Regiment of Illinois Volunteers in Centralia, Marion Co., IL on October 18, 1861. He was mustered in by Capt. Watson. He was mustered out November 9, 1864 in Chattanooga, TN. At the time of his enlistment he was 29 years old, 5'10" tall, brown hair, gray eyes, fair complexion, and married.
His nativity was Pillowville, Weekley, Tennessee.

John McBride listed as having been mustered out Nov. 9, 1864.
From Civil War Pension Record: His death was caused by a tree falling on him. Richard C. Fathing (a Corporal in the same company as John) of Marion Co., IL signed an affidavit for John's Civil War pension, noting that he was aware that on the 6th day of April 1862 at or near Pittsburg Landing/Shiloh, TN, John J. McBride was disabled while in the line of his duty by a musket ball striking him on the right hip or groin, dislocating the hip joint, from which injury he suffered during the remainder of his term of service.
Affidavit also given by William J. Adams who was a Sergeant in the same company (Co. F 48 Regt, Ill Infantry Vol.). John signed affidavit that he received his wound in the Battle of Shiloh, TN on April 6, 1862 and was treated in the General Hospital at Savannah, TN in regimental hospital of the 48th Ills. and in convalescent camp at Huntsville, Ala.

At the time of her death, information was given by S. E. Masters (Marsters), Pixley, CA. Cause of death given as asthenia superinduced by endocrine disfunction. (Lutisha must have been visiting her daughter Anna Mary (Laurie) McBride Marsters at the time of her death.)

Peter, John and Wm. Wilburn were early settlers in Odin Township, Marion Co., IL. Peter settled in the south-west corner of the twp, and the two latter settled near the Silas Barr place. Peter and William died in the county. John moved to Texas, where he died. The first school was taught in an empty cabin that stood near Silas Barr's in 1834, and Peter Wilburn was the first teacher. The first regular school house was built of logs, and stood near the McClelland graveyard.

Thomas had the occasion to change the spelling of his name from "Deadman" to "Deadmond". He signed many documents, Thomas Deadmond, and some as Thomas Deadman. Evidently he did this so as not to get him confused with other Thomas Deadman's in the area! He had received some "Tax Liens" for another Thomas Deadman and was almost arrested with a "Paulpers Warrant" !

Thomas Deadman, born 1784 in North Carolina. He changed the spelling of his name from Deadman to Deadmond. He migrated to Virginia and married Elizabeth Milliron in Bedford County, Virginia He had several children born in Orange County, North Carolina and at lease one born in Bedford County, Virginia. Thomas migrated to Marion County, Illinois by covered wagon in 1827 and died there in 1851. Thomas and Elizabeth settled in Marion County, Illinois and their many descendents branched off in all directions.

Thomas Deadmond and his family lived in Bedford Co., VA, Orange Co., NC and "Middle Tennessee" before coming to Marion Co., IL in 1827. One of his daughters, Denishah Hayes, told in her later days of "walking behind the wagon from Tennessee to Illinois."
*1827 - From Brinkerhoff's History of Marion Co: Cold weather caught them off guard in 1827 and they built a lean to to spend the winter in. The Deadmond Cemetery is now located on part of this land and 152 years later some of the ffth and sixth generations of the family still live there. It is said the first person to be buried in the Deadmond Cemetery was "an Indian who rode through on horseback and became sick. Thomas took him in and nursed him but he died and was buried under an old oak tree near the north fence."
Had we known Thomas Deadmond, I do believe we would have found him a busy man. It is said that he ran a trading post and was a Justice of the Peace. In the Deadmond Family Bible (now in the possession of Riley Deadmond), we find the births and deaths of the family.

Thomas Deadmond, a Virginian, was Odin township's first settler. He arrived in the southern part in 1827. The season was well advanced. He erected a shed-home with the roof slanting toward the north and south wall left open. A log fire afforded warmth and a cooking area. Mr. Deadmond entered eighty acres in Section 28 in January 1837.
