Deceased Name: Max Eugene Wilkes

UVALDA - Mr. Max Eugene Wilkes, age 71, of 5387 Cedar Crossing Road, Uvalda, died Tuesday morning, February 17, after an extended illness.

Funeral services for Mr. Max Eugene Wilkes will be conducted Thursday morning, February 19, at 11A.M. from Alston Methodist Church with Rev. David Aycock and H. J. Johnson officiating.

Interment will follow in Sharpe Cemetery.

Mr. Wilkes was a native of Toombs County residing in Bonaire for thirty two years. He joined the Navy in 1950 serving in the Korean War. After serving ten years, he attended Georgia Southern and graduated with a Bachelors degree in 1963. He served as co-owner and operator of Wilkes Auto and Garage for fifteen years, and retired to Toombs County in 2000. He was a member of Alston Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Tilman and Lizzie Mae Sharpe Wilkes of Alston.

Mr. Wilkes is survived by his wife, Shelby Wilkes of Uvalda; one daughter, Beth Harr and husband, John of Ft. Walton Beach; two sons, Michael Wilkes and wife, Heather of Bonaire and James Wilkes and his wife Penny of Cochran; three brothers, Robert Q. Wilkes, William Cole Wilkes, and Joseph Wayne Wilkes all of Uvalda; and three grandchildren, Laura Harr of Ft. Walton Beach, Jessica Wilkes and Stefannie Wilkes of Cochran.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00P.M. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Central Georgia, 3780 Eisenhower Parkway, Macon, GA 31206.

Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service of Vidalia is in charge of funeral arrangements.

COCHRAN - Shelby Jean Wilkes, age 71, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009, at her residence surrounded by her family after three years battling cancer.

Funeral services are Monday at 11A.M. at Grace Chapel Church of God of Prophecy.

Burial is in Sharpe Family Cemetery in Toombs County at 3P.M. Monday.

Shelby was born in Grays Landing in Toombs County on December 7, 1937 to the late Joe and Wilma Martin Cook and had lived in Bonaire for 30 years, then in Alston for 6 years before moving to Cochran 5 years ago. She was married to Max E. Wilkes in 1956 until his death in 2004. She was owner of Shelby's Beauty Salon in Bonaire for over 20 years and retiring in 1998. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and making quilts for family and friends. She was affectionately known as MaShelby to her family and she will be greatly missed. She was a member of Alston Methodist Church and attended Grace Chapel Church of God of Prophecy.

Survivors are her children, Beth (John) Harr of Mary Esther, FL, James (Penny) Wilkes of Cochran and Michael (Heather) Wilkes of Bonaire; grandchildren, Laura (Brooks) Hammet of Miramar Beach, FL, Jessica Wilkes of Cochran and her fiancŽ Stephen Schaefer of High Point, NC, Stefannie Wilkes of Cochran and Gracie Jane Wilkes of Bonaire; sisters, Geraldine (Glenn) McKenzie and Janice (John) Davis of Vidalia.

The family is at 338 Williams Road.

Mathis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
