Ida Lorene Mason Sorensen 1918 ~ 2010
Ida Lorene Mason Sorensen, our dear mother and cherished wife of the late Asael Taylor Sorensen, Sr., passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 27, 2010, in her home surrounded by family and loved ones.
Born September 22, 1918, to Joseph Armstrong Mason and Ellen Fitches, Ida grew up in Ogden, Utah. She began entertaining at an early age for various church and community activities, and was part of "The I's Have It" trio on the radio.
As a young adult, she especially enjoyed performing for "dudes" at Zion National Park. Ida was singing in a church meeting in California a few years later when she attracted the attention of her future husband, Ace Sorensen. They were married on March 10, 1944, in the Salt Lake Temple.
During their 57 years together, Ida performed with all her heart everywhere they lived - whether serving as a mission president's wife in Brazil and "mother" to countless missionary sons and daughters, raising her own seven children, working in community and church auxiliaries, teaching high school in Uruguay, handling office work in Hong Kong, welcoming dignitaries into her home, helping brides in the Salt Lake Temple, or representing the LDS Welfare program in Ecuador.
Following Ace's death in 2001, Ida continued her odyssey of travel and service in Egypt and New Zealand, relishing new experiences and making friends wherever she went. She was not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and she shared it cheerfully and boldly at every opportunity to the very end of her life. Beloved of her large family, as well as her wonderful missionaries,
Ida is survived by her children: Ellen (Don) Holsinger, Provo, UT; Jean (Roque) Willard, Show Low, AZ; Kristine (Rand and Kelly, both deceased) Prestwich Gehret, Show Low, AZ; Colleen (Ralph) Chipman, Salt Lake City, UT; Ace (Marilyn), Orem, UT; Mark (Sherrill), Worland, WY; Lori (Otto) Dickman, Washington, DC; 32 beautiful grandchildren and 32 precious great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. at Valley View 2nd Ward, 4395 S. Albright Dr. (2100 E).
A viewing will be held that morning from 10:00-11:30 a.m. at the church.
Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Services arranged by Premier Funeral Services.
