    OBITUARY
    MRS. GERTRUDE JOHNSON
    HOMEMAKER
    Dateline: FOLKSTON, GA.

    Mrs. Gertrude Johnson died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Jefferson County Hospital.

    The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Folkston United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dan Williamson and Gene McCullough officiating. Burial will be in Folkston City Cemetery.

    Mrs. Johnson, a native of Camden County, was a homemaker and a member of Folkston Garden Club. She was a member of Folkston United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday school.

    Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Armistead, Bartow; a brother, Lawrence J. Wildes, Riverdale; a sister, Aderine Reynolds, St. Marys; and two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    Pallbearers will be Johnny Jones, David Jones, Forrest Wildes, Clint Johnson, Lindsey Jones, Sidney Wildes and Pierce Harris.

    While he participated in the massive naval search for missing pilot Amelia Earhart in 1937, Lawrence J. Wildes Sr. of Fayette County had no sense of the future impact of his mission.

    "He was not aware he was a part of history because he wasn't aware of the part she'd play in history," said Mr. Wildes' daughter, Carolyn Cunningham of Mableton. "Later it hit him."

    Mr. Wildes, 82, died Tuesday at Vencor Hospital Atlanta of complications from open heart surgery in 1998. The funeral is 11 a.m. today at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill.

    He joined the Navy in 1934 and was a fireman on the USS Lexington in July 1937 when Ms. Earhart disappeared on her attempt to fly around the world.

    Ms. Earhart was last heard from on July 2, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered a massive naval search that included the Lexington. Before the search was called off July 18, the Lexington crossed the equator and international dateline at their intersection, the first time that had been done in more than 100 years. Mr. Wildes had a certificate commemorating that July 14 event, said his wife, Edwina Wildes.

    "He thinks she and that navigator were probably charting -- I don't mean they were spies -- maps for the United States," said Mrs. Wildes. The Lexington's charts of the area were used in World War II, his daughter said.

    Mr. Wildes spent four years in the Navy. "He had kind of been rebellious toward someone in authority over him," said his daughter, and he was dishonorably discharged. But in 1940, he enlisted in the Army, fought in Europe in World War II and received five medals. One was the Good Conduct Medal and another was the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one silver service star for his participation in five campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy invasion, she said.

    The war made him an inventor. "It was just so hard for the soldiers to get shells extracted and keep the machine guns going," said his daughter. "He invented a device to put in the barrel and get it out real quick and keep going."

    Working for Atlantic Coastline Railroad, now CSX, after the war, he moved to East Point in 1968. He specialized in timber inspection and treating railroad ties. Ties had to be air dried before they were preserved with creosote. Mr. Wildes devised a drying shed to improve the process, and it gained widespread use, said Mrs. Cunningham.

    Survivors other than his wife and daughter include a son, Lawrence J. Wildes Jr. of College Park; a sister, Aderine Reynolds of St. Marys; and three grandchildren.

    Miss Jimmie Lucille Wildes, 81, died Monday (May 17, 2010) at Baptist Village Retirement Communities after an extended illness.

    She was born in Charlton County on January 14, 1929, to the late Alexander Chesteen Wildes and Geminia Anderson Wildes. She lived most of her life in Bacon County, but she moved to Waycross in 1986 after the death of her step-mother, Nora Crews Wildes.

    Miss Wildes was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Rachel Sunday School Class. A family member described her as a "gentle soul" with a great love for family and friends. She was known as an excellent cook who contributed her special dishes for church and family gatherings.

    She was also preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Prescott Bessent; and eight brothers, Arnold, Milton, Liston, Clyde, Leon, Homer, Donald and Dolphus.

    Survivors include one sister, Hazel Mancil (husband Willis) of Waycross; two sister-in-laws, Annie Wildes of Hazlehurst, and Bonnell Wildes of Alma; and numerous other relatives.

    A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (May 20, 2010) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Corinth Church Cemetery in Charlton County. The family will receive friends 1 until 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Calvary Baptist Church Mission Fund, 1622 Gibbs St., Waycross, GA 31501.

    Julia Belle Wildes Dowling, 91, died Thursday morning (March 9, 2006) at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., after a brief illness.

    She was a native of Charlton County, but had lived several years in Pierce and Brantley counties before moving to Callahan, Fla., in 1983.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lester Dowling, and her parents, Henry Preston Wildes and Martha McKenzy Clark Wildes.

    She was a homemaker. She was an active member of Buford Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Adult 2 Sunday School Class. She was also the team mother for the church bowling league.

    She is survived by her four daughters, Latriece Osteen (Roy), of Blackshear, Patricia Elledge, of Atlanta, Bonnie Hull (K.D.), of Atlanta, Judy Ramsey (Gary), of Eddyville, Ky.; a son, Buddy Dowling (Libby). of Callahan, Fla.; 12 grandchildren;14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Mixon (Cecil), of Waycross; a brother-in-law, Robert Bowen, of Blackshear; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

    A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Buford Grove Baptist Church in Hilliard Fla. Burial will be in the Twin Rivers Baptist Church Cemetery in Brantley County.

    Visitation will be held Monday evening from 6 until 8 at Smith Funeral Home in Blackshear.

    Mary Emma Wildes Mixon, 90, died Monday evening (Dec. 7, 2015) at Baptist Village Retirement Communities after an extended illness.

    She was a native of Blackshear who lived most of her life in Waycross. She was formerly employed for many years by the cigar factory.

    As a beautician, she owned and operated Mary's House of Beauty. She was a member of Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, Preston and Martha Clark Wildes, her husband, Cecil Edward Mixon Sr., one daughter, Terry Kirkland, and one son, Cecil Edward Mixon Jr.

    Survivors include one son, Greg Mixon, of Waycross, eight grandchildren, numerous great-grand-children, nieces and nephews.

    A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

    Mrs. Bowen was a member of Southgate Baptist Church. She was formerly employed with Gilman in St. Mary's at the Craft Bag Mill and was also a homemaker.

    She is survived by her husband Robert L. Bowen, Jr. of Blackshear, a daughter Marrisia Bowen of St. Mary's, a son Robert Daniel Bowen wife Laura of Roswell, Ga., 2 grandchildren Bob Bowen of Colorado and Katie Bowen of Nebraska, 2 sisters Julia Belle Dowling of Callahan, Fl., and Mary Mixon husband Cecil of Waycross, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

    A funeral service will be held 11AM Thursday at Southgate Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Waters Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 7 until 9pm at the funeral home.

    The family request that the McDonalds Coffee Club serve as honorary pallbearers and are asked to be at the church by 10:40am.

    Henry was born a healthy child and began his youth in a strong and hardy condition. When he was 13 years of age his right leg became continually painful. Doctors were baffled as to the cause and sent Henry to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and bone cancer in its final stage was diagnosed.

    STATESBORO -- Ernestine Prescott Chandler, 92, died May 9 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.

    The native of Charlton County lived in Statesboro the past 53 years. She was a teacher and garden supervisor in Charlton County and a homemaker. She was co-owner of Chandler Sales Inc. She was a former member of Jolly Club, Home Demonstration Club and several other organizations. She was a member of Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church and Cora Williams Circle. She was the widow of Willie Hendricks Chandler.

    SURVIVORS: a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Ken Smallwood of Calhoun; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Pat Chandler of Colonel's Island and Charles and Pat Chandler of Statesboro; a sister, Sally P.     Sarah Jane "Sally" Prescott Beale, 90, of Danville, Va., died Wednesday (Oct. 26, 2005) at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a two-year battle with cancer.

    The funeral service will be held Friday (today) at 4 p.m. at Schoolfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sarah Doss officiating. Burial will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.

    Mrs. Beale was born on Aug. 27, 1915 at Folkston, Ga., to the late Owen Melvin Prescott and the late Mary Wildes Prescott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burgin Wally Beale Sr., eight brothers and two sisters.

    Mrs. Beale was a former teacher and homemaker. She graduated from Charlton County High School and attended Georgia State Women's College in Valdosta and Georgia State Teachers College in Statesboro, Ga.

    After her marriage to Wally Beale, she moved to Danville in 1942. She was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church for 50 years and a member of the Ladies Bible Class, Adult Bible Class, United Methodist Women, Senior Citizen's Club, Inc., the national and local AARP and Dan River Retiree's Club.

    Survivors include her daughters, Lalanne B. Barber and her husband, Bill, of Lansing, Mich., Latrelle B. Francis and her husband, Bob, of Mechanicsville, Va., Linda B. Porter and her husband, Jim, of Chase City, Va., and Lisa B. Niblock and her husband, Marc, of Concord; her son, Burgin W. Beale Jr. and his wife, Beverlee, of Southern Pines; her nephew, Harold Beale and his wife, Mary, of Danville, Va.; a special friend, James Kirby, of Danville, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

    RATCLIFF Mildred E. Kendrick Ratcliff, age 92, passed away on Jan. 18, 2010. Mildred was born on Oct. 3, 1917 in Waycross, GA to the late Ransel Hateras and Emma Mae Thrift Wildes. She was a longtime resident of Jacksonville, FL for over 60 yrs. She was the definition of a lady and the epitome of a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a gifted homemaker. Her talents were many including cooking, sewing and gardening. One of her greatest pleasures in life was to gather her family together and prepare a delicious meal for them. Her positive influence was a blessing to her family and friends and her legacy will live on. Her light shined brightly as she lived a life of faith in God. "A woman of valor, who can find? She is more precious than fine pearls."

    Mildred is preceded by her six brothers and one sister. She is also preceded by her first husband, Grover L. Kendrick and survived by their daughters; Gloria D'Angelo and husband Anthony, Diane Brown and husband William; four grandchildren: S.W. Hubbard, Whitney Hubbard, Kate Quinn and Caroline Ray; and three great grandchildren: Cameron Quinn, Keaton Quinn and Bradford Ray. She is also preceded by her husband, Rev. James Ratcliff, whose most recent ministry was Christ by the Sea United Methodist Church in Vero Beach, FL from 76'-86'; and survived by two step-daughters, Carmen Johns and Becky Brittian; three step-grandchildren: Steve Johns, Susan Grant and Kathryn Blumberg; and three step great-grandchildren.

    Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 from 5-8pm.

    Funeral service will be 11am Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at Mandarin United Methodist Church, 11270 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, with a reception immediately following in the fellowship hall.

    Graveside service will be held at 2pm at Evergreen Cemetery, gate 2.

    CASON Glenda Wildes Cason, 69, of Douglasville, Georgia died unexpectedly on Friday, February 29, 2008 after a very short illness.

    She was the daughter of R.H. and Emma Thrift Wildes of Folkston, Georgia. A 1956 graduate of Charlton County High School, Glenda later graduated from the Dell School of Medical Technology in Asheville, North Carolina. She was employed in many hospitals and doctor's offices in South Georgia and North Florida. Later in life, she was a real estate agent in Valdosta and Douglasville, Georgia.

    Glenda was a former president of The American Cancer Society- Valdosta Chapter, former president of the Azalea Women's Club and the Wymodausis Women's Club, and a past president of the Board of Realtors in Valdosta. She further served on the Board of Director's of the St. Simons Island Jaycetts and was a member of the Valdosta Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

    At the time of her death, she was a Parishioner of St. John Vianney Catholic Church of Lithia Springs, Georgia. She had been a Parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Valdosta, where she served as a Cantor.

    Glenda, more beautiful than Ava Gardner, was an exceptional cook, better than Paula Deen. She was also an avid bridge player. More importantly, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

    She was married to Michael Harvey Cason for almost 49 years, but they had known each other for almost 60 years.

    Survivors include her husband, Michael, her two sons, Joey Cason of St. Simons Island, Georgia and David (and wife Tracie) Cason of Loganville, Georgia, and her two grandchildren, Keeli and Gabe Cason of Valdosta, Georgia. Glenda is also survived by her sister, Mildred Ratcliffe of Jacksonville, Florida, two close nieces, Gloria D'Angelo of St. Augustine, Florida, and Diane Brown of Tallahassee, Florida, and nephews, Ransel Wildes of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Stanley Wildes of Folkston, Georgia.

    There will be a Sacramental Rosary on Sunday at 7 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Valdosta.

    Services will be held Monday, March 3, 2008 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

    Interment will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday at Pineview Cemetery in Folkston, Georgia.

    Wade L. Reynolds, Jr., also known as the "Ice Man," passed away Thursday, November 15 at Haven Hospice after battling a long illness. Born December 2, 1940 in Waycross, GA, Wade was 77 years old. Wade graduated from Camden County High School Class of 1958. He enjoyed attending alumni reunions. Wade was a charter member of the Folkston Lions Club, a member of the Jacksonville Lions, and a member of the Lake City Lions Club. Every Friday night you would find Wade at Hardees showing off his prized '55 Chevy at the weekly Cruise In. Antique cars were his passion as he was a member of the Gainesville Street Rods. Wade was preceded in death by his parents, Wade L. "Lankford," Sr. and Aderine Wildes Reynolds, and his brother James Elton Reynolds.

    Wade is survived by his wife Melba Girard and his four children: Sarah Reynolds of Folkston, GA, Cindy (Matt) Kelly of Plant City, FL, Wendy (Cully) Kieckhafer (Asheville, NC), and Tracy (Ryan) Lee. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Taylor Sheaffer, Brittney Lee, Kaylan Kelly, CJ Kieckhafer, Ashton Lee, Noel Kieckhafer, Ayden Kelly, Shelby Kelly, and Tanner Kieckhafer. There are also many nieces and nephews along with grand nieces and nephews.

    Memorial services are being handled by Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home and will be conducted in the chapel of the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018. Graveside services will follow at Pineview Cemetery in Folkston, GA at 4:00 p.m. The viewing will be held Sunday, November 18, 2018, from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Haven Hospice of Lake City.

    Carl McCall Wildes, Sr., 92, of Andrews, a beloved father-grandfather and the husband of Doris W. "Nonnie" Wildes, departed this life on Friday morning, October 30, 2015 at Tidelands Community Hospice House.

    Mr. Wildes was born the son of Christopher Columbus Wildes, Sr. and Annie Ardelia Thrift Wildes on July 26, 1923 in Jacksonville, Fl. He was a 1940 graduate of Andrews High School and was a retired employee of Sampit Lumber Mill. He was a United States World War II Navy Veteran and was a member of the DESA-Destroyer Escort Service Association. He enjoyed woodworking and his greatest pleasure and love was spending time with his family.

    Carl and Doris was married on September 11, 1948 and celebrated 67 years together. Their home was blessed with: two children, Carl McCall "Tony" (Sarah) Wildes, Jr., and June W. (David) Watford; two grandchildren, Tammy (Lee) McClellan and David "Dave" (Adrienne) Watford II; and four great-grandchildren, Carson Watford, Peyton Watford, Owen Watford, and Wyatt McClellan. He also leaves behind: a sister, Jeneal Moree; and two sister-in-laws, Brenda Wildes and Shelby Wildes.

    He was predeceased by: his parents; three brothers, George Wildes, Alexander Wildes, and Christopher Wildes, Jr.; and a sister, Joan Wildes Tyler.

    Funeral Service with Military Honors was at 3PM, Sunday, November 1, 2015, at the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery.

    The Wildes family received family and friends prior the service from 2-3PM at the Andrews Chapel.

He was a devoted grandfather who supported his grandchildren in all of their activities no matter the destination nor time. He was a very heartfelt individual who would help an individual during their time of need. McKinnon was a devoted follower of his Lord and Savior and it showed in his daily walk with the Lord. He was a huge supporter of both Bonaire United Methodist Church and Warner Robins High School.

    In addition to his parents, there awaiting for him at the gates of heaven was his beloved brother, Marcus Wildes.

    Mr. Wildes was born in Wayne County, was a retired Civil Service Employee of Warner Robins AFB, a VietNam Veteran of the U.S. Army & the U. S. Air Force Reserves, member of Empire Baptist Church and was son of the late Lacy M. Wildes.

    Survivors: wife, Elizabeth Askew Wildes; his mother, Martha Rose Wildes; two daughters, Tasha W. Shepard (Paul) and Darla Elrod; one son, Larry D.     Jeanette I. Mackert passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 14, 2021 in Jacksonville Florida.

    Jeannie was born in Waycross, Georgia on March 26th of 1932 and became a long-term resident of Florida. She was active in her communities as the president of the Nassau County Cancer Society and as a hospice volunteer for the Oncology department of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Cooking and sewing were favorite past-times, and she was also a great fan of college football.

    Jeannie was preceded by her husband, Philip Keeport Mackert on October 8th of 2013. She is survived by her brothers Charles and Robert Wildes and a sister Della Sides; her son William Wesley, wife Kristin and her grandsons Reid Wesley, Robbie and Alexander Emerson.

    A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville Beach Florida. Memorial donations may be made to the Nassau County Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Bryant was a native of Brantley County, a veteran of the US Army, and the son of the late Liston Wilbur and Claudia Mae Walker Wildes. Brothers Chester, Lester, and Clifford Wildes and sister Vernie Mae Taylor also precede Bryant in death.

    She is our Daddy's Heart, "His Booger". Momma was a devoted wife, a loving momma, a granny, a sister, a friend to many and loved by all. She enjoyed giving praise to the Lord through prayer and song. She loved Christ and looked forward to joining the Lord and her loved ones in heaven.

    Eddie Eugene Prescott, 73 of St. Augustine, FL, passed away Monday, July 24, 2017, at The Community Hospice Palliative Care in Jacksonville after an extended illness.

    Born in Savannah, GA, his parents were Lee Roy Prescott and Gladys Opal Register Prescott. He was preceded in death by his brother, Roy Coleman Prescott.

    Eddie was a member of Gideon’s International and North Jacksonville Baptist Church (NJBC.org), where he served as an usher. Eddie retired from JEA after working 31 years in Power Plant Maintenance, and was a member of the REA (Retired Employee Association.) He loved gardening and grew many fruit trees. He was a member of Florida Baptist Disaster Relief, travelled many times to New Orleans to assist after Hurricane Katrina, helped build the building for the Women’s Resource Center, and participated in missions to other places.

    Survivors include his wife, Glinda Wylene Manor Prescott, of St. Augustine, FL; his son, Gene D. Prescott (Kelli), of St. Johns, FL; 2 grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth Prescott and Ryan Michael Prescott; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gloria Wright (Jimmy) of Jacksonville, FL, and Glenda Wainright (John), of Nahunta; Sister-in-law Ann Prescott, along with many nieces and nephews.

    A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, July 27, 2017, at 3PM at Riverside Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Corum, Rev. William “Buddy” Morris, and Rev. Randy Wainright officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service.

    Interment will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery, Nahunta, GA.

    Family and pallbearers are asked to meet at the church Thursday by 2:30PM.
