COLUMBIA - David Howell Berry, 59, died Sunday, December 12, 2010. A graduate of Cardinal Newman High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He returned from service and graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina with double master's degree. He paved the way as the first handicapped student in a wheelchair at USC. He received numerous honors and awards, including Outstanding Disabled Veteran of the Year, South Carolinian of the Year and the B'nai Brith Award. He served on the National Board of Disabled American Veterans and developed the first outpatient drug and alcohol program for the Veterans Administration. An official soccer coach volunteer at A.C. Flora High School, he recently had his first art show at Dorn VA Medical Center. David also served as a guardian ad-litem.
Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Carol Smith Berry; daughter, Elizabeth Berry Lemmond (Steve) of Lexington; sons, Roy Johnathan Philpott (Mary Katherine) of Piedmont, David Michael Berry (Buffy) of Greenwood; granddaughter, Anna Katherine Philpott; aunts, Wanda Suasco of Rock Hill, Joye Nesbitt of Bishopville; mother-in-law, Juanita Smith; sisters-in-law, Cathy Patton, Joyce Aguilar, Melody Klos; brother-in-law, Barry Smith, Brian Smith; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Davis Howell Berry; sister, Ann Berry; father-in-law, Leonard O. Smith Sr.; brother-inlaw, Leonard O. Smith Jr.
