    Francis Marion Howard

    My Father-in-law, Francis Marion Howard and his wife Mary Ann Greene had their first child, Ethel, at Blount's Ferry in 1898. Their second child, Willard, was born in March of 1900 also at Blount's Ferry. Thereafter, the family moved to Watertown. She lived to 103 so you can see I got this information from one who lived it.

    They lived in one of the row houses long enough to see the children walking the old board to walk to their school. Mr. Gelberg of the clothing store told me that that board walk got him in his original business. He would ride a bike to Watertown with a basket of clothing, sell it to the workers and return to town.

    Frank, as he was called, had a mule and a drag. It was his job to drag the excess wood into the burning fire. They lost their third child, Sadie to an unknown illness in Watertown. She was buried at the Hopewell Baptist cemetery near Blount's Ferry to be near the child's grandparents. Soon afterwards, they moved to McAlpin, Fla. The child's death seemed to have something to do with the move.

    An interesting note. Frank owned the mule and a plow, bedstead, some chairs but that was it, no wagon. He went to Max Brown at the State Exchange and Max loaned him a wagon to make the trip. Frank and Liza had to sharecrop for the first year but they raised 9 children, built two houses, was burned out of both, rebuilt and died leaving his children 200 acres debt free. He once told me in the last days he felt like he had somehow failed. One of the finest, most respected men in Suwannee County. More failures like Francis Marion Howard and this country would not be in the obvious trouble today.

    HAWTHORNE - Ethel H. O'Hara of Hawthorne died Friday. She was 102.

    Born in Blounts Ferry, Mrs. O'Hara moved to Hawthorne from Santos in 1929.

    She was a homemaker, a school teacher and descendant of two Florida Greene and Howard pioneer families. She was a member of the Hawthorne Woman's Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

    Mrs. O'Hara was a member of First United Methodist Church.

    She is survived by four daughters, Grace Kea of Jacksonville, Norma Lewis of Bartow, Ovida Story of Jacksonville and Faye O'Hara of Hawthorne; a son, William "Billy" O'Hara of Hawthorne; two sisters, Hazel Stewart and Mary Beth Petersen, both of Lake City; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

    Hazel Howard Stewart, a former longtime resident of Lake City, died Saturday at her home in Jacksonville after an extended illness. She was 89.

    Mrs. Stewart was born in McAlpin and lived in Lake City for most of her adult life. She was a retired retail buyer and sales clerk with Bruce Clothing Company in Lake City.

    She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lake City for more than 50 years and was a member of Rachel Circle.

    Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Stewart Mathews of Jacksonville; a son, Thomas J. "Spud" Stewart of Houston; and a sister, Mary Beth Petersen of Lake City.

    STEWART Mrs. Hazel Howard Stewart, 89, resident of Jacksonville and former resident of Lake City, died at her home in Jacksonville Saturday night, Feb. 22, 2003 after a long illness.

    She was the daughter of the late Frances Marion Howard and Ann Eliza Greene, born Oct. 14, 1913 in McAlpin, FL and had lived most of her adult life in Lake City, FL.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Stewart, Sr. and her Son-in-Law, Jerry David Matthews.

    She was a faithful member of The First Presbyterian Church of Lake City for over fifty years and was a long-time member of Rachel Circle and active in many church endeavors. She also served three generations of North Florida Women as a buyer and sales staff for Bruce Clothing Company of Lake City.

    She is survived by her children, Barbara Stewart Mathews (Jerry), and Thomas J. “ Spud” Stewart (Ann). Her grandchildren, William David (Jacki), Michael Stewart (Chris), Jeremy David (Sharon) Mathews, Mary Lass (Rodger) and Thomas Ian (Margaret) Stewart, Robert Slaton (Jennifer) and Amy Slaton Mudano (Mitch). Great grandchildren, Sarah, Will, Brain, Megan, Zoe, Hunter and Ethan Mathews, Zach Slaton and Marcus Mudano. Sister, Mary Beth Peterson (Walter). Many nieces and nephews also survive, and she was a member of the Mathew A.B. Howard and George Washington Greene extended families of North Florida.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Wednesday, Feb. 26 at The Chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Highway 41 South at Forest Lawn Road with Rev. Roy Martin, Pastor of The First Presbyterian Church officiating.

    Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 10 A.M. Wednesday until 11 A.M. and requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 469, Lake City, FL 32056.

    Mary Elizabeth Howard Petersen, 92, of Lake City, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Ben Atchley State Veterans Home in Knoxville, TN

    She was born on October 6, 1921 in McAlpin, FL, to the late Francis Marion Howard and Mary Ann Eliza Greene. As a young woman she felt a sense of duty to serve her country in the WWII effort, and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves - Women’s Reserve (WAVES). She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who dedicated her time to her family and extended church families at the First Advent Christian Church of Lake City and McAlpin Advent Christian Church.

    She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Walter C. Petersen Sr., her parents, her siblings; Ethel Howard O’Hara, George Willard Howard, Pauline Howard Sanders, Sadie Howard, Francis Marion Howard, Jr., Goff Ives Howard, Verna Howard Coolidge, Hazel Howard Stewart, Marguerette Howard, and Greene Van Buren Howard.

    Survivors include her son; Walter C. (Angie) Petersen Jr., of Knoxville, TN, grandchildren; Benjamin H. (Annie) Petersen of Sanford, FL, and Eric D. (Beth) Petersen of Knoxville, TN, and great grandchild, Mary Caroline Petersen of Knoxville, TN

    Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 am, on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 in Memorial Cemetery, Lake City, FL, with Pastor Fred Gaylard officiating and Pastor Tom Amerson assisting. Visitation with the family and friends will be from 5:00pm-7:00pm, Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at the funeral home.
