    Dorothy McKinnon, of Adel, Georgia, passed away on October 10, 2018 at her home. Born on March 12, 1921 in Adel to the late Katie Belle Shiver Wilkes and William Duncan Wilkes, she matriculated in the public schools of Cook County with distinction, graduating with academic honors and as president of her Senior class. Continuing her education she attended Bessie Tift College and Georgia State Womans College (GSWC) now known as Valdosta State University obtaining a BA degree in 1942. She contributed to the World War II effort relocating to Washington, D.C., serving as receptionist and operator for Director J. Edgar Hoover, Federal Bureau of Investigation until her marriage to 1st Lieutenant Raymond J. McKinnon in 1943 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

    During the War years she joined Raymond in Monterey, CA and Puerto Rico for the duration; returning to live in Adel for the remainder of her life.

    Mrs. McKinnon was a life long member of the First Baptist Church of Adel serving as Sunday School superintendent, Vacation Bible School director, member of the Womens Missionary Society and Church Choir for 35 years.

    Active in the community, she volunteered in the PTA, acted as Regional Judge of the One-Act high school Drama competitions. and performed in community productions giving readings and a variety of dramatic oral interpretations in churches and school systems throughout south Georgia. In 1968 she enrolled in the University of Georgia and was graduated with an M.Ed.degree to pursue the position of Visiting Teacher under the Cook County Board of Education in Adel. She served 20 years until retirement in 1987.

    Highlights of our Mother’s life included notable encounters: hosting the First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt at GSWC Library dedication in Valdosta; friendship with Dorothy McGuire during New England summer stock dramas in Boston and Cape Cod in 1940; the dedication of the Wilson Bryant Wilkes Building with then Governor of Georgia, The Honorable Lester Maddox, at the Georgia State Mental Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia; establishing the first Cook County Daycare and Training Center, now the Cook County Service Center and presided with Governor Jimmy Carter at the building dedication.

    Mrs. McKinnon left two daughters and one son-in-law: Judith McKinnon Lamphear (Steven C. Lamphear, deceased) of St. Augustine, Florida, and Dorothy (Dottie) McKinnon Schmick (Donald S. Schmick) of Johns Creek, Georgia; and one son, Raymond Wilkes McKinnon of Los Angeles, California; three grandchildren: Lesliedee Lamphear (David Gubbini); Stevany Lamphear Peters (Timothy Peters), all of Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Jeffrey McKinnon Schmick of Johns Creek, Georgia; four great-grandchildren: Peyton Ann Peters, Lucinda Wilkes Gubbini, Vivien Clark Gubbini and Greyson Clark Peters of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Adel with Rev. Bill Marlette and Rev. Jeff Clemons and Music Director Doug Stephens officiating. Interment followed in the Woodlawn City Cemetery. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2018 at Boone Funeral Home (North); 202 N. Hutchinson Ave., Adel, Georgia.
