Soldier was born 8 October 1754 in Duplin Co. North Carolina. Soldier moved to Fairfield District SC in 1771 with father Cannon Cason Sr. and mother Rose Whitehurst Cason with family. Cannon Sr. purchased land in Duplin (Sampson) in 1756. Soldier married Martha in SC.

Record #12752 - South Carolina - Cannon Cason of Fairfield in the state of South Carolina who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Graves of the Regt. commanded by Col. Goodwin in the South Carolina line for 12 months. Inscribed on the Roll of South Carolina at the rate of 40 dollars -- cents per annum to commence on the 4th day of March, 1831. Certificate of Pension issued the 21st day of May 1833." Cannon Sr. moved to Duplin (now Sampson) Co. North Carolina ca1750, then, in 1771, to old Craven County (Fairfield) South Carolina. He married Rose (Rosa) Whitehurst in North Carolina ca. 1747-8.

He signed his will thusly : Cannon (C C) cason. However, he was lliterate and must have been disabled in some manner. He was born ca. 1724-5 and may have died from wounds in the Rev. War.

1-Son William,(1749-1847) was a RS (pension), md. 1st Ann Roberts, 2nd Jeanet Rogers. He moved to Warren Co. GA ca. 1799.

2-Son Cannon Jr. (1754-1843) was RS (drew pension) moved from Fairfield to Randolph Co. Ga. in his old age and died there testate in 1843

3-Son Willis (ca. 1756-8) RS, md. Mary Williamson, moved to GA. ca. 1795 and died possible in Pulaski Co ca, 1834.

4-Son Whitehurst, b. ca 1764, moved to GA where he died childless in Washington Co. in 1818.

5-Son Labon (ca. 1767, m. Civil Davis in GA, moved to GA after 1790, died in Montgomery Co, 1809-10.

Comments: Mirabeau Lamar Mershon was a male baby, not female. Somebody made a mistake in listing him as a female and now people have copied that into family trees found all over the internet.
Mirabeau Lamar (1798-1859) was a great man, founder of the Columbus ENQUIRER newspaper, author and second president of the Republic of Texas. Mirabeau Lamar Mershon's elder brother Joseph Enos Mershon (1827-60) became the editor of the Columbus ENQUIRER and obviously knew Mirabeau Lamar. Joseph Enos Lamar went to Mobile and died there during an epidemic, thought to have visited Mirabeau's friends there, the Roberts family. Joseph's wife was a first cousin of Joel Abbot Roberts who also had a son Mirabeau Lamar Roberts. Cason Jewell Callaway, co-founder of Callaway Gardens, was born in LaGrange, Georgia, the son of Fuller Earle and Ida Cason Callaway. Cason's father was a self-made success in the business world, and by the year of Cason's birth in 1894, Fuller Callaway had built a strong retail business in LaGrange and was just a few years short of running his first mill.

By the way people treated him, Cason quickly learned that he was the son of an important man. However, his father told him not to get "puffed up." His social standing only meant he would have to work twice as hard as anyone else. Fuller did not like the idea that his success would keep Cason from knowing the adversity that builds character.

For twelve years, Cason was the only child (his brother Fuller Jr. was born in 1907). Cason's mother, Ida Cason Callaway, treated her sons gently and provided a balance to their father's toughness.

Cason Jewell Callaway

Like his father, Cason Callaway (1894-1961) spent years as a textile manufacturer, a businessman, and a state agricultural leader. He achieved his greatest success in developing Callaway Gardens after retiring from Callaway Mills. A native of LaGrange, Cason attended Bingham Military School in Asheville, North Carolina, and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville before getting a degree from the Eastman School of Business in Poughkeepsie, New York. After finishing school, he returned to Troup County to work in the mills. He developed Valley Waste Mills into a commercial success by refining recycling operations.

During World War I (1917-18), Cason joined the U.S. Navy and worked in the Navy Supply Corps' Bureau of Supplies and Accounts at Navy Headquarters in Washington, D.C. After Cason returned to LaGrange, his father stepped away from active mill management, and Cason began managing the mills. He married Virginia Hollis Hand of Pelham, and the couple had three children, Cason Jr., Howard Hollis, and Virginia.

Convinced in the 1920s that the national economy was heading for rough times, Fuller advised his two sons to choose one business arena and sell off their other holdings. The brothers sold most of their businesses and created a new corporation, Callaway Mills, which oversaw mill management. One key to Cason's success in mill management proved to be salesmanship, a trait he shared with his father. Cason established relations with General Motors, entered the rug and tire-cord business, and hired managers and salesmen to market mill products. Thanks to careful stewardship and to profits made from selling the other businesses, Callaway Mills survived the Great Depression without closing any plants, while management kept at least one member of every mill family fully employed.

In 1934 and 1935 Callaway Mills suffered two employee strikes. Eventually management won out and strikers left the area, but the economic stresses of the decade led Cason to retire. He became chairman of the board of Callaway Enterprises and served until 1937; his brother, Fuller Jr., became president. Cason accepted national positions, served on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, and was a director for various national companies.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Cason became close friends with Franklin D. Roosevelt, a part-time resident of west Georgia. Roosevelt began visiting Warm Springs in October 1924, while trying to overcome the effects of polio. He and Cason shared a love of the people, a desire to improve the land, and an interest in farming, even though they disagreed on politics. In 1932, the year Roosevelt was elected president of the United States, Cason led fund-raising efforts for Georgia Hall, the new administration building for the Warm Springs Foundation (later the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation). The foundation was funded by Georgians as a tribute to their new president.

Following his retirement from the mills, Cason set up an experimental farming operation of 40,000 acres at his Blue Springs Farms near Hamilton, just south of LaGrange. He worked with the University of Georgia to develop other showplace farms as part of the One Hundred Georgia Better Farms program, which encouraged better farm practices, between 1944 and 1947. The program encouraged using machinery and developing fine productionwhether in beef, wool, or fruits and vegetables. The program officially ended in 1950.

In 1947 Cason had a heart attack. His focus shifted from agriculture to the development of what later became Callaway Gardens, situated on former cotton fields that had been stripped of nutrients by intensive farming. The gardens opened in May 1952. After Cason's death, his son Howard, known as "Bo," oversaw operations of the gardens for many years.

Fuller Earle Callaway Jr.

Born in LaGrange, Fuller Callaway Jr. (1907-92) graduated from LaGrange High, Georgia School of Technology, and the Eastman School of Business in Poughkeepsie, New York. He started working in the mills at age fourteen and became president of Callaway Mills in 1935. He was a community leader and a benefactor of the town of LaGrange, LaGrange College, and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Fuller Jr. operated Callaway Mills for many years and established foundations that gave away millions during his lifetime.

In 1948 Fuller Jr. took a ten-year leave from mill management. During those years, he painted, worked with electronics, and assembled a herd of Hereford cattle. He then returned to the helm of Callaway Mills and successfully guided operations until April 1968, when he shocked many by selling Callaway Mills for cash to Roger Milliken and Deering-Milliken Company of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

In 1930 Fuller Jr. married Alice Hinman Hand of Pelham. Fuller and Alice had met years earlier when their siblings, Cason and Virginia, married. Fuller and Alice had two children, Ida and Fuller. They lived at the Hills and Dales estate of his parents, where Alice worked for decades to preserve the home and gardens. Since Alice's death, the gardens have been renamed Ferrell Gardens at Hills and Dales and are open to the public on a limited basis.

Fuller Jr. helped to found the Institute of Textile Technology in Charlottesville, Virginia, and along with two other alumni, the Georgia Tech Research Institute, which supports research in all areas of the sciences. In 1943 he organized the Callaway Community Foundation (later the Callaway Foundation). The foundation carried on the work of the Textile Benefit Association organized by his father in 1919. The Callaway Foundation owned all assets of Callaway Mills and has made contributions from income to religious, charitable, and educational organizations. More than $251 million from the foundation have has been given to local, state, and national groups between 1943 and 2003.

Cason Jewell Callaway, Jr. age 86, died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at home. Mr. Callaway was born in LaGrange, Georgia, the son of Cason Jewell Callaway and Virginia Hand Callaway. A graduate of Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA, and a student at The Citadel, Charleston, SC until World War II, when Lt. JG Callaway served in the First Chemical Casual Company.

A lifelong entrepreneur, Mr. Callaway returned to Georgia to start Dixie Size and Chemical, which was sold to Exxon as Callaway Chemical in 1985. He served on many business advisory boards, both local and national, including 4th National Bank, Royal Crown Cola, Boy Scouts of America, Garden Conservancy, The Smithsonian and was a trustee emeritus of his alma mater, Episcopal High School. In Harris County, he supported early childhood education by implementing a pilot program focusing on the parent/child relationship. A generous, loving man with a wicked tennis backhand in earlier days, he always loved reading and over time developed strong concentration and focus. Mr. Callaway's last business venture was to start the Callaway Blue Springs Water Company in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Virginia, and his grandson Kent Callaway.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Nancy Hodges Callaway, his four children Phebe Robertson, Cason Callaway, III, Kenneth Callaway, and Florence Holmes, ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

His heart included love for all his extended family and friends and the family is grateful for all the caretakers that assisted him.

Following a family burial, a memorial service and celebration of his life will be held 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 23, 2010 at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 69 Mobley Road, Hamilton, with the Reverend Jeff Jackson and retired Pastor Mabry Collins officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Nicholas Episcopal or a charity of their choice.

Cason Jewell Callaway Jr., an entrepreneur and philanthropist whose parents founded Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, died Sunday evening at his home. He was 86.

The funeral is 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 69 Mobley Road in Hamilton.

"He was a real nice and wonderful man. He was one of the most generous people I've ever known," Bill Turner, retired chairman of the W.C. Bradley Co., said Monday. The two were in the same Thursday lunch group. Turner last saw him there about a month ago.

"He was very private about what he did. He didn't do it to get the praise," Turner said.

Callaway was born in LaGrange, the second of three children of Virginia and Cason Callaway Sr.. His nickname was "Caso." He was a graduate of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., where he became a trustee emeritus, and attended The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., for two years. He then served in the U.S. Army, beginning in World War II, both as an enlisted soldier and then an officer.

One of the founding members in 1998 of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, Callaway donated five of the church's eight acres. The church is off Ga. 315. The building was completed in 2003.

"He was a major contributor and very faithful," said the Rev. Jeff Jackson, the priest at St. Nicholas. "He was one of the most humble and genuine people I've ever met. ... He really understood what it meant to be humble and generous."

Callaway attended Bowling Green Business University Academy, then worked with Callaway Mills. He first worked for the company in New York then in LaGrange.
In addition, in 1952 he founded Dixie Size and Chemical in Columbus, which was sold to Exxon as Callaway Chemical in 1985.

Callaway was a former president of the Georgia-Alabama Council, Boy Scouts of America, and once served on the Scouts' national executive board. He was also a director of the former Fourth National Bank in Columbus. He was a life-long member of the Callaway Foundation.

He was also on the board of the Smithsonian Institute, said his brother, Howard "Bo" Callaway -- a former U.S. Congressman and Secretary of the Army under President Gerald Ford.

"He was extremely generous in many ways," said Bo Callaway. "A lot of it I didn't even know about."

Callaway helped develop commercial property around the former Columbus Square Mall on Macon Road.

"It is a natural development site," Callaway told the Columbus Enquirer in 1964.

In 1973, Callaway donated 50 acres in Russell County for Chattahoochee Valley State Community College, now Chattahoochee Valley Community College.
In his most recent business venture, he founded Callaway Blue Springs Water Company in Harris County in 2002.

Callaway's parents founded the Callaway Gardens resort in 1952. Covering 13,000 acres, it was first named Ida Cason's Gardens.

In addition to Bo Callaway, Cason Callaway is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Nancy Hodges, and their four children: Phebe Callaway Robertson; Cason Callaway III; Kenneth Hodges Callaway; and Florence Callaway Holmes. He had 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia; and a grandson, Kent Callaway.

Howard H. "Bo" Callaway currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees for the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation. He also served as Chairman, President and/or CEO from 1953 until 1964, 1966 until 1970 and again from September 1993 until November 2003. He has been a member of the Board since 1958.

From 1949 until 1952 Callaway served as a lieutenant in the United States Army. During his military career he was a platoon leader in Korea and an instructor in tactics at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, three Campaign Ribbons and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

In 1964, following 11 years as Callaway Gardens President and CEO, the 3rd Congressional District of Georgia elected Callaway to the United States Congress. After his term, he returned to Callaway Gardens from 1966 to 1970. Since 1970, he has served as the Chairman/President of Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado. From 1970 to 1973, Callaway also served three years as President/Chairman and CEO of Interfinancial, Inc. in Atlanta.

An appointment to Secretary of the Army in April 1973 led to his being awarded the Medal of Distinguished Public Service by the Department of Defense in 1975. In 1976, Callaways political talent and experience were called into action as he managed Gerald Fords presidential campaign. Callaway has been politically active throughout his career. In 1966, he was the Republican nominee for Governor of Georgia. In 1980, he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate from Colorado and from 1981 until 1987 he was Chairman of the Colorado Republican Party.

Callaway has been an active member of several Boards of Directors including Trust Company of Georgia, Georgia Power Company, The Southern Company, SCI Systems, Inc., United Bank of Denver, World Business Council, Chief Executives Organization and the CML Group. He also served as the International President of the Young Presidents Organization. He was Vice President of the State of Georgia Chamber of Commerce from 1961 until 1964. In July 2001 Callaway was appointed to the Board of the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism. He is currently serving as Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.

Callaway has been a member of numerous organizations including the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, National 4-H Service Committee, Republican National Committee and Phi Kappa Phi.

Callaway attended The Georgia Institute of Technology in 1944 and 1945, and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1949.

He and his wife, Beth, have five children and sixteen grandchildren.

Howard H. "Bo" Callaway, age 86, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Spring Harbor Assisted Living in Columbus.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Pine Mountain, GA.; the Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. after the visitation.

On Wednesday, March 19, a funeral mass will be at noon also at Christ the King Catholic Church. Father John A. Madden will officiate. A private interment will follow.

Mr. Callaway, son of Cason Jewell and Virginia Hand Callaway was born in LaGrange, Ga., on April 2, 1927. A second generation Harris County, Ga., citizen, Mr. Callaway lived in many places during his lifetime but always loved his Harris County heritage. His early education was in the Harris County School System, where he met his beloved Laura Elizabeth "Beth" Walton in the sixth grade at Hamilton Grade School. They married on June 11, 1949. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. After a distinguished military career, which included time serving as a platoon leader in Korea,

Mr. Callaway returned to Pine Mountain, Ga. to assist his parents with the creation of Callaway Gardens. This 6,500 acre woodland garden, which features gardens, resort amenities, a preserve and a community, is owned and operated by the 501c3 Ida Cason Callaway Foundation™ (ICCF) and is dedicated to environmental education and land stewardship. He served in leadership positions at the Gardens from 1953 through 2003, at which time he became chairman emeritus.

Intertwined within his life's work at the Gardens, he set his sights on a political career which included a seat in the U. S. House of Representatives for Georgia's 3rd congressional district, which made him the first Republican elected from Georgia since the Reconstruction era. He later was defeated in the highly contested 1966 run for Georgia Governor in a three-way run-off situation. Had he won, he would have been the first Republican Governor in Georgia since 1872. He later served in positions such as director of Freedoms Foundation, a Georgia Republican national committeeman, Richard Nixon's southern coordinator during the 1968 presidential campaign, Secretary of Army under Presidents Nixon and Ford during which time he was instrumental in the post-Vietnam transition from the draft to the all-volunteer army, and served as campaign manager for Ford's 1976 election.

The Callaways owned Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado from 1970 until 2004. During their time in Colorado, Mr. Callaway was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for the U. S. Senate. From 1981 to 1987, he served as the chairman for the Colorado Republican Party and was head of the political action committee GOPAC.

In addition to his political, military, and professional accomplishments, he served in a multitude of positions related to citizenship, politics, education and various industries. He was particularly proud to be part of the Young Presidents' Organization and Rotary.

In addition to his love for Callaway Gardens, Mr. Callaway had multiple interests. He was a rabid baseball fan to the point he created a program for talented yet economically-challenged baseball players, Opportunities Through Baseball, which was later acquired by Major League Baseball, and started a summer collegiate baseball woodbat team, the Woodbats.

His passion for nature and the Crested Butte area led him to re-establish the threatened Clinton Cutthroat Trout. His boat, the O Be Joyful, was a favorite pastime and one that he relished sharing with his family. He shared all of these amazing accomplishments with his beloved wife by his side. Interestingly, both had earned their private pilots license.

Mr. Callaway was preceded in death by his wife Laura Elizabeth "Beth" Walton Callaway, his brother Cason J. Callaway Jr. and his brother-in-law Ralph Walton.

He is survived by his five children; Elizabeth "Betsy" Callaway Considine (Terry) of Denver, Colo.; Howard H. "Bo" Callaway Jr. (Allyn) of Bristol, Va.; Edward C. Callaway (Lynn) of Hamilton, Ga.; Virginia Callaway Martin (Roger) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and Ralph W. Callaway (Camilla) of Columbus, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren with three on the way; and sisters-in-law, Nancy H. Callaway and Martha P. Walton, both of Hamilton, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation™, c/o Callaway Gardens, P.O. Box 2000, Pine Mountain, Ga. 31822.

In celebration of Mr. Callaway's life, a memorial organ concert will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, at the Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel at Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Ga.. Admission will be complimentary.

Mr Raines, a native of Abbeville, had retired from the Townsend Division of Graniteville Co after 20 years of service. He was a member of Little Horse Creek Baptist Church, where he was a past deacon and a member of the men's Sunday school class. He was a member of Woodmen of the World.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Hallman Raines, a stepdaughter, Majorie Johnson, Warrenville, a stepson Rudolph Jackson, Wagener, four sisters, Elizabeth Martin, Clayton, NC, Thelma Harris, Jacksonville, Fla, Josephine Nichols, Abbeville, and Ann Fritts, Hendersonville, Tenn, and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbears will be nephew and James Johnson and Guy Grimes.

Honoray pallbearers will be deacons of Little Horse Creek Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his stepdaughter, on Elizabeth Street, or from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

APRIL 14, 1905-JANUARY 12, 1998 DURHAM - Elizabeth Raines Martin, retired school teacher, died on Monday, January 12, 1998, in Coble Health Care Center of the Methodist Retirement Community, Durham, North Carolina. She was born in Abbeville, South Carolina, the daughter of the late J.C. and Willie Raines.

Mrs. Martin is a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, Boone, North Carolina. She taught elementary grade school in Roxboro, Beaufort, and Morganton before coming to Clayton in 1948, where she retired.

Mrs. Martin was married to the late Reverend William C. Martin twenty-two years. After his death she filled her time doing for others, visiting in hospitals and nursing home.

Surviving: sisters, Josephine Nichols of Abbeville, South Carolina, and Mary Ann Fritts of Henderson, Tennessee; half-sister, Cora Weir of Chester, South Carolina.

Funeral service held on Thursday, January 15, at 2 p.m. in McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel, Clayton, North Carolina, with the Reverend Richard Stone officiating.

Entombment held in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

Visitation held at 1 p.m. one hour prior to the service.

Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Weir 3:00 PM Tuesday at Beaver Creek Baptist Church with Revs. Terry Wingate and Clyde Riley officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Born in Abbeville, SC, October 19, 1895, Mrs. Weir was the daughter of the late James Cason and Mary Corinne (Broadway) Raines. She was a graduate of Abbeville High School and Winthrop College in 1918 and went on to become an Elementary and High School teacher and Principle. She was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church where she was active in Bible School and was an officer in the Baptist Women's Missionary Union. She was honored by the church for having taught Sunday School for over 73 years. She was also a member and officer of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and an officer in the Clemson Extension Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors include, two daughters, Eloise Weir Blanks of Clemson, SC, Mrs. T. Elliott (Lavinia) Weir McDonald of Chester, SC; three granddaughters, Rinne Blanks Canon of Clemson, SC, Sandra kay McDonald of Fort Collins, CO, Mrs. Edward D. (Harriet) McDonald Simmons of Clemson, SC; two half-sisters, Mrs. Anne Raines Fritts of Hendersonville, TN and Mrs. Josephine Raines Nichols of Abbeville, SC.

Columbus, GA- Cason Jewell Callaway, III, 60, of Columbus, GA, died Thursday, September 19, 2013 in West Memphis Arkansas.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, September 24, 2013 in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA, 31907 with Reverend Mabry Collins officiating.

A private interment will follow.

The family will receive friends Monday evening, September 23, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM in the Edgewood Room at the funeral home.

Mr. Callaway was born June 7, 1953, son of Nancy Hodges Callaway and the late Cason Jewell Callaway, Jr. He graduated from Blue Ridge School in Virginia and attended Presbyterian College and Columbus State University. He worked with various family businesses through the years. However, the real love of his life after his family and friends was volunteering time to the Canine Search and Rescue and the Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Callaway worked with the Harris County Sherriff's Department in providing search and rescue dogs through the South Georgia Search Dogs. He also served with the North West Harris Volunteer Fire Department and served two years as the Head of the Council of the Harris County Council of Fire Chiefs. In his capacity with SAR he served four months in Iraq as a civilian contractor with American K-9 assisting the U.S. Army. At the time of his death he was on a new adventure as a driver for PAM Transport of Tontitown, AR.

In addition to his father, Mr. Callaway was preceded in death by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Cason Jewell Callaway, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth B. Hodges.

Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Elizabeth Smith Callaway of Columbus, GA, three children, Cason Jewell Callaway, IV and his wife Emily of Mercer, TN, Carrie Callaway Roberts and her husband, Joel of Memphis, TN, and Marshall Smith Callaway and his partner, Carlos "Lito" Velasquez of Davis, CA, four grandchildren, Marion Callaway, Lily Callaway, Hana Roberts and Collin Roberts, his mother, Nancy Hodges Callaway, one brother, Kenneth Hodges Callaway, two sisters, Florence Callaway Holmes and Phebe Callaway Robertson, many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Besides his family he also leaves behind his beloved SAR Dogs, Xunia, Tonks and Jazzy.

The grandson of Callaway Gardens founders Virginia and Cason Callaway Sr. has died while on a truck-driving trip to West Memphis, Ark.

Cason Jewell Callaway III passed away in his sleep inside his big rig sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday, his wife, Beth Callaway, said Friday.

"He stopped in West Memphis, Ark., for the night before picking up his next load," she said. "His driving time ran out, so he had to wait, sleep for the night, and then drive the next morning. But he just never woke up."

West Memphis, Ark., is just across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tenn.

Callaway, 60, had been trucking for Tontitown, Ark.-based PAM Transport for about a year. Until recently, he had been a team driver, but his co-driver quit and returned to Atlanta last weekend.

Callaway's wife said he had no major health problems, other than high blood pressure for which he took medication, she said. But doctors had cleared him to drive.

Beth Callaway also said it wasn't out of her husband's nature to do something a little adventurous like drive a truck. He served two decades with the Northwest Harris Volunteer Fire Department in Harris County, she said.

He also worked with South Georgia Canine, which trains dogs for various duties, such as searching for bombs and drugs. Callaway's specialty was working with cadaver and wilderness dogs, his wife said. He had done that since 1997.

"He actually took one of his cadaver dogs and worked as a civilian contractor with the military in Iraq for four months in 2010 and 2011," she said.

"He's just always been one for helping out in the community," said Beth Callaway. "That's been his thing, with the fire department and the search dogs and everything like that."

Callaway is the son of the late Cason Jewell Callaway Jr., one of three children born to the founders of Callaway Gardens, a nature preserve attraction launched in 1952 in the Harris County town of Pine Mountain, just north of Columbus.

Callaway III is the nephew of Howard "Bo" Callaway, who ran the gardens for several years and is a former U.S. representative and secretary of the Army. He also is the cousin of Edward Callaway, the current chairman and chief executive officer of Callaway Gardens.

Beth Callaway said funeral arrangements have not been finalized for her husband. The couple has been living in Columbus.

Other than his wife of 40 years, Callaway is survived by three children. They are Cason Callaway IV, his wife, Emily, and their children, Marion and Lilly; daughter Carrie Roberts, her husband, Joel, and their children, Collin and Hanna; and son Marshall Callaway, and his partner, Carlos Velasquez.

Survivors also include his mother, Nancy Callaway, and three siblings, Phebe Robertson, Kenneth Callaway and Florence Holmes.

Eloise Weir Blanks CLEMSON -- Mrs. Blanks of Ravenel Circle, died at home on July 12, 2009. She was born in Chester County, South Carolina on August 30, 1925, and was the daughter of Leslie B. and Cora R. Weir.

She was predeceased by her husband, Victor G. Blanks.

Surviving are her daughter Corinne Cannon of Clemson, her sister Lavinia McDonald of Chester, and two special nieces, Sandra K. McDonald of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Harriet M. Simmons of Clemson.

Eloise retired to Clemson in 1992 from Charlotte, North Carolina, where she lived for over 40 years. At the time of her retirement she was a private caterer and operated the employee and executive dining rooms for Wachovia Bank. Mrs. Blanks was active in areas of church administration at Tabernacle Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church, The First Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. She was also active in community and church affairs having served as chief usher at Ovens Auditorium and having held numerous state and national positions in both the ARP and Presbyterian churches. Eloise was an avid gardener who loved her yard and loved to share her flowers. She was also an enthusiastic bridge player, a most accommodating hostess, and a true friend to her beautiful white cat, Ashley. In recent years Eloise enjoyed the activities of the Central-Clemson Senior Center and her friends there. She was a member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14th, in the chapel at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with interment on Wednesday July 15th at 11:00 A.M. at Beaver Creek Baptist Church in Chester, South Carolina.
