AMERICUS - Jeanette "Jean" Wilkes McPhaul, 95, of Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus, Ga., formerly of Moultrie, died peacefully on June 4, 2012, at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus.
Born Oct. 9, 1916, in Moultrie, Ga., Mrs. McPhaul was the daughter of the late Georgia state senator and superior court judge, John Anderson Wilkes Sr. and the late Mrs. Mattie Powell Wilkes, pioneer settlers of Moultrie. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Moultrie and was enrolled in the cradle roll department when she was an infant. She fondly remembered her days as a member of the Lena Tyson Sunday School Class. She was a former member and officer of the Moultrie Federated Guild and the Azalea Garden Club. As a young woman she worked as a secretary for several Moultrie business firms and enjoyed volunteer work as a Pink Lady at Vereen Memorial Hospital.
She had a strong faith, a keen eye for fashion and a quick wit. She will be deeply missed by many.
Mrs. McPhaul was predeceased by her husband, Howard L. McPhaul, and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by two daughters, Jan Middlebrooks of Marietta, Ga., and Nancy McPhaul of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Woodard of Dothan, Ala., and James D. Middlebrooks III (Milinda) of Milan, Ind.; two great-grandchildren, Malisa Middlebrooks of Madison, Wis., and Patrick Golden of Dothan, Ala.
James D. Middlebrooks III, John A. Wilkes III, Albert B. Maxwell, William M. McIntosh, Reginald Comer and the Rev. Saunders Pinckard will serve as pallbearers.
The family wishes to thank her nephew, John A. Wilkes III, and his wife, Edna, of Norman Park, for their many years of care and support, her caregivers at Magnolia Manor in Moultrie and Americus, and dear family friends, Sharon Lawson of Norman Park, and Reginald and Mary Comer of Americus.
The funeral service will to be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012, at the Moultrie First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mark Addington, the Rev. John Brodess and the Rev. Joy Wilson will officiate. A reception at the church will follow the service. A burial service will follow in the family plot in Westview Cemetery.
At 3 p.m. on Monday, June 11, memorial service and reception will be held at Magnolia Manor in Americus.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Moultrie, or to Magnolia Manor, or to a charity of your choice.

Janet McPhaul Middlebrooks, age 77, a resident of Marietta, GA, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 following a brief illness at the home of her daughter in Dothan, AL.
A Celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. (Central Standard Time), Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the Glover Funeral Home Chapel, 1468 Hartford Highway, Dothan, AL, 36301, with Pastor Troy West officiating. The family will receive friends at Glover Funeral Home on Saturday from 1:00 to 1:45 prior to the services. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to The Atlanta Opera, 1575 Northside Drive, N.W., Atlanta, GA, 30318.
Janet was born on April 14, 1940 in Moultrie, Georgia to the late Howard and Jeanette Wilkes McPhaul. She graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga, with a B.A. in music education. She was employed at Helzberg Diamonds and was an avid lover of the arts, especially the opera. One of her favorite performances was playing the role of "Bloody Mary" from the musical South Pacific. She was a member of the Pensacola Chamber Opera and performed in a number of operas and operettas.
Survivors include her son, James (Jay) Middlebrooks, III, (Milinda), Milan, IN; her daughter Elizabeth (Liz) Woodard, Dothan, AL; her sister Nancy McPhaul, Saratoga Springs, NY; two grandchildren, Brian Patrick Golden of Troy, AL; and Malisa Middlebrooks of Milwaukee, WI.
The Family would like to thank the staff of Flowers Hospital, Kindred at Home, and especially the staff of Home Instead Senior Care for the compassionate care they provided to our mother.
