    • Mr. Burney R. Wilkes, Sr., 66, 326 Bowman Road, Candor, formerly of Rockingham, died Monday, March 1, 2010, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

      Mr. Wilkes was born July 12, 1943, in Richmond County, son of Bernice Wilkes and Margie Gathings Wilkes.

      He previously worked as an auto mechanic at Russell Bennett Chevrolet and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

      Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., one hour prior to the funeral service, Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Jesus First Free Will Baptist Church.

      The funeral will be at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Smith and Rev. Frank McQuage officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond Memorial Park.

      The family will be receiving friends at other times at the home of his son at 203 Hannah Pickett Avenue, Rockingham.

      Mr. Wilkes was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Jimmy W. Wilkes.

      Survivors include his daughter, Lisa “Chrissy” W. Taylor of Rockingham; sons, Burney R. Wilkes, Jr. “Buzzy” of Rockingham and Thomas A. Wilkes of Hamlet; and seven grandchildren.

      Memorials may be made in his memory to Jesus First Free Will Baptist Church, 1109 Hylan Ave., Hamlet, NC 28345
