Harry T. Wilkes
Harry Theodore Wilkes, 85, quietly and peacefully passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. He was a resident of the Birchwood Terrace Healthcare Nursing Home in Burlington, Vermont. Harry was born on June 28, 1924, in Los Angeles, California. He was the only child of Nathan Wilkes and Ethel Solotaroff. He graduated from Garfield High School and attended UCLA prior to enlisting in the Army/Air Corp in 1943. He flew many combat missions in B-17's over Germany during WWII. He survived a few close calls, including a crash landing in England and earning the Purple Heart. After the war, he was among the original hand- picked airmen who helped form the Strategic Air Command. He spent the rest of his military career flying B-36's and B-52's. He retired from the Air Force in 1969 with the rank of Lt. Col. and chose Austin, Texas, as his permanent retirement home. Harry went on to work for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation as a senior accountant. He retired from the state in 1986 to finally lead a more leisurely life and travel the world. Harry met Verna May Steffen of Raymond, Minnesota, before heading off to World W ar II and he returned several years later to sweep her off her feet. They were married in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948. They were blessed with three wonderful children, David, Bruce and Donna. Verna passed away in 1993. Harry then married Elaine Cole Seay, a long time friend of the family and widow of a former B-52 crew member, in San Antonio in 1994. The happy newlyweds resided in first in Austin and then moved to Sun City in Georgetown, the Meridian Retirement Community in Temple, and finally relocated to Burlington, Vermont to be near Elaine's children and grandchildren. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Verna. He is survived by David and Miranda Wilkes and son Stephen, Amman, Jordan; Bruce and Lynette Wilkes and four children (Christie, Eric, Bryan and Joshua), Syracuse, Utah; Donna Wilkes, Show Low, Arizona; and his beloved wife Elaine, Burlington, Vermont. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2009, at the Cook-Walden Capital Parks Mortuary in Pflugerville, Texas. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery immediately following the services.
