AILEY- Mrs. Essie Evans Hughes, age 96, died on July 9, 2008 at Bethany Home Nursing Center of Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native of Wheeler County, living most of her life in Montgomery County. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and loved to work with flowers in her garden. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Alston United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years, B. Hughes; one son, Kenneth Hughes; a sister, Edith Bennett; a brother, Walker "Buddy" Stewart.

Survivors include two sons, Robert (Earldene) Hughes of Millen, GA, Wilmer "Sweet" Hughes of Vidalia; three sisters, Sadie Fountain of Ludowici, GA, Jean Thigpen of Cochran, GA, Alice (Ernest) Currie of Statesboro; one sister-in-law, Ruth Stewart of Mt. Vernon, GA.; five grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Essie Evans Hughes will be Friday, July 11, 2008, at 3 p.m. at the Murchison Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Hughes Family Cemetery in Ailey, GA.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 10, 2008, from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bethany Nursing Home, 1305 E. North Street, Vidalia, GA. 30474

Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia is in charge of the arrangements.
