    Died:
Peter "Pete" Barcia, 92, of Lake City, Florida, died April 28, 2009, in his home of complications from dementia. Born in Elmsford, New York, March 22, 1917, he married Edah Mary Albury of Key West, Florida, in 1938, and shortly thereafter moved to Miami where they had 4 sons. During the war years, he was a contract surveyor in Cuba and Trinidad. He worked for several hotels on Miami Beach, serving as Service Manager of the Shore Club Hotel for 5 years. In 1952, following his dream, the family moved to Lake City and purchased a farm, the Lazy P, where he lived until his death. The early years were difficult with farming's learning curve forcing Pete to return to Miami to work the winters in the hotel business; his wife died in 1959. He married Betty Bowman Hubbard of Lake City of in 1961, and adopted her two daughters, Annette and Jennette, and together they had a third daughter Mary Caroline. Due to their vision and perseverance, they eventually farmed a 70 acre tobacco allotment, had 11,000 laying hens in cages, raised several hundred head of cattle, and grew numerous field crops and sweet potatoes. For many years, they managed the Lazy P Farm Home Delivery Egg Service which home-delivered 1500 dozen eggs/week in Gainesville and Lake City. He was one of the first in Columbia County to use sprinkler irrigation on field crops(1955). In the 1985, they opened a 25 acre plant nursery surrounding their home on US 441, which he and Betty managed until his decline in health.

Pete was an avid outdoorsman, initially fishing off Miami and the Keys, and later hunting for dove and quail; at one time, he owned 19 bird-dogs. He loved deer hunting in Alabama, where he built a lodge 15 years ago for his family and friends. He traveled to North Carolina, the Dakotas and Alaska in these pursuits. He golfed from his youth, growing up with the famous Turnesa brothers, most of whom became pros and some, PGA champions in the 1930's and 1940's. He installed a 1st class putting green on the farm.

Mr. Barcia is preceded in death by two sons Patrick and Michael Barcia.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty; daughters Annette Barcia, Jennette Ward (Clifton) and Mary Summerfield (Michael); sons, Peter Barcia (Julie) and Paul Barcia (Ann), brother Joseph Barcia, 23 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
