Nellie W. Fleming

ATLANTA - Mrs. Nellie Wilkes Fleming, 79, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in Atlanta. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Greenville, N.C. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Fleming, a native of Jackson Springs, N.C., was born the daughter of James Christopher and Lottie Mae Holt Wilkes.

She lived her early life in Candor and was a 1944 graduate of the nursing program at N.C. Baptist Hospital, which was affiliated with Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem.

She moved to Greenville in 1944 to begin her nursing career at Pitt General Hospital. Through the years she nursed at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, worked as a school nurse for Pitt County Schools and nursed at a number of doctors offices, retiring from Dr. Aycock's office in the mid 1970s.

Mrs. Fleming was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church and the Ada Cherry Sunday School Class. She had also been a member of the Town & Country Senior Citizens and the Tuesday Bunch. For the past several years she had made her home in Atlanta near her children.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Fleming was preceded in death by a sister, Lottie Wilkes Bost, in 1987; a brother, James B. Wilkes, in 1998; and her husband, Robert O'Neal "Bob" Fleming, in 1993.

Surviving are her daughters, Ruth Fleming Clark and husband, Russ, of Phoenix and Ann Fleming Beach and husband, John, of Atlanta; son, Robert O'Neal Fleming Jr. and wife, Pamela, of Atlanta; grandsons, Brian Christopher Williams and wife, Tracy, Michael Edward Williams and John Harrison Beach III; great-grandson, Kyle Christopher Williams; sisters, Margaret Wilkes Nance of St. Petersburg, Fla., Nina Wilkes Redding of Lakeland, Fla., and Louise Wilkes Cashatt of High Point; brother, William Holt Wilkes of High Point; and very special friend, Scottie Utley of Greenville.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
